[Line Problem] Porting landline phone number, keeping DSL servic

We decided to cut out our landline service last week, but port the number to Google Voice so we could set up forwarding to the cell phone for free. I talked to someone at ATT last week who told me that it was no problem. Today, we lost internet when the port went through. They say it will take a couple weeks to hook back up. Anyone else have this problem or something similar? Any tips to dealing with ATT? If Charter can hook us up faster, then we might have to go with them.

If you have Charter TV you can do a self install.
Basically just grab a Cable Modem, hook it up and

This is to be expected. When the number was ported, your account (which is the number) is closed. They'll have to go through the process of setting up dry-loop dsl -- which means giving you a new phone number. (you won't be able to call anyone except 911 and repair service (611?))

No we don't. We don't even have a cable line running to the house. I just called Charter and someone can come set it up Thursday afternoon which is a lot quicker than ATT.

We're a little nervous about moving to cable after being with ATT for so long because we'll have to deal with old Bellsouth e-mail addresses (but it looks like they let you keep it).

It's the first time I've ported a landline, and when I called ATT last week they told me otherwise. If they would have told me ahead of time, we could have had another internet service ready to go.

I'm quite happy with Charter. I left AT&T/Bellsouth 3 or 4 years
ago and have kept my address.

No idea what the story is where you are, but in Florida AT&T dry loop DSL has dialtone on the line but no outgoing calls are permitted, not even to 911.

Maybe it's a NC thing, but any phone line with dialtone MUST be able to call 911.

As far as keeping your bellsouth email address, there had been a lot of inconsistencies for customers being able to keep there email services. Most (not all) had to force migrate there email addresses to Yahoo to keep receiving email but will eventually lose there bellsouth addresses. Some legacy customer are still able to keep there bellsouth account as long as it is associated to a back up dial services. Others just have there "free" bellsouth account with out paying anything.

As per current Terms of Services:

Access to Yahoo! After Termination by AT&T. If your Service is terminated by AT&T, you will no longer have access to your Member account information using your Member ID, except as outlined in this Section and Section 9 (Yahoo! Premium Services). If you combined your Yahoo! ID with a Member ID, you will not be able to access Yahoo! using your combined ID after termination, unless you close your Member ID (your Member ID will be closed automatically no fewer than 60 days after termination). If you did not combine a Yahoo! ID with your Member ID, you will be given the option (when you sign in at Yahoo! using your Member ID) for at least 60 days after termination, to close your Member ID and transfer certain account information to a new Yahoo! ID. If you continue to access a Yahoo! account through a different Internet access provider after your Service account is terminated, then your use of your Yahoo! account after that time will be subject to the Yahoo! Terms of Service at »info.yahoo.com/legal/us/yahoo/ut···173.html.

Really, AT&T should be able to handle this process without it being a disaster.

They should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time.

In fact, they ARE capable of doing it right (as the AT&T worker promised the OP) if they set their mind to it. They have been doing this for several years already!

You are correct, it IS to be expected, sadly. But we should have no hesitation in trashing a totally incompetent and inept AT&T.

If you really want to stay with AT&T you can give their Executive Appeals a call, 800 355-9542. They may be able to assist in expediting reconnection of your DSL service.

Thanks for the phone number! I'm going to save it for future use, but it's too late this time. They really dropped the ball on this one. I literally spent 6 hours on the phone on Tuesday trying to (1) figure out what happened, (2) trying to have them restore the service, and (3) trying to order U-verse and have it hooked up in a timely manner. That's about 5.5 hours too long.

Apparently our DSL service was "grandfathered in," and it's no longer available in our area--only U-verse is. It still seems like they should be able to hook it back up since we had it before. At least they lowered stand-alone U-verse internet prices because before the holidays they were trying to charge a lot more for the same speed then what we were paying for DSL.

But after I compared it (even with recent price reductions), they were much more expensive than Charter for similar speeds. Charter can give me 30 Mbps for $30 a month, while AT&T offered 24 Mbps for $50 a month. We're actually only going with the 15 Mbps with Charter which is only $20 a month.

Once again msoc has forced another customer to another isp . at&t does not care about it's customer's and it show's!!!!!

Not sure what msoc stands for, but AT&T really has been horrible to deal with this week. Cable was connected yesterday, and speeds are a lot faster. Cancelling the U-verse order has taken 45 min on hold and counting.

We've got ~$75k in AT&T stock, and it's going to be sold ASAP. Maybe cutting customer service costs have helped the bottom line over the last couple of years, but I don't see how the poor treatment of long-term customers is sustainable.

@windstream.net

You haven't heard the last of att yet!!!! You will still have to fight with them about them still billing you for u-verse
