 | Cheapest internet service in Queens? I currently have FiOS with Verizon and tried to switch to DSL because the cheapest FiOS service is over $50/month which I cannot afford so I wanted the $14.95/month DSL service, but they said they no longer offer DSL in my area because everything is fiber optic now.
Does anyone know what other ISPs offer the cheapest service? I found a free dial-up service called MetConnect but I don't know what kind of dial-up modem to buy nor how to connect it to the computers/laptops. |

 | I have RCN but I live in the Astoria part of queens. I am really happy with they're service. I think they have a plan at 29.00 a month. |
|
 | That's weird, I live in Douglaston and RCN says they don't service my area.
In any case I downgraded my 15/5 FiOS to 3/1 from $60 to $50.
I can't believe DSL isn't offered anymore. I may just cut off my internet entirely because $50 is way too much. I'll probably just have to use the internet when I'm at school and get a girlfriend or something. ... |

| That's how these companies get you if you do not sign up for their triple play. You can get the phone, internet, and tv for like 90 bucks a month with FiOS. The part about DSL not being available is true. My neighbor had Verizon DSL for a long time and last year they told her she had to switch the FiOS cause they were taking down the copper, of course she got a sweet deal on the FiOS since she was being forced to upgrade. -- Mets, Cowboys, Devils |

 | Wow, $90 is way too much. I don't own a television or a phone (I use a prepaid phone, but even after loading it with $20, I only end up using a fraction of it before it expires after 3 months). |

1 edit | Have you tried our site tool? Maybe there's other choices »/psearch
Add zip (11362,11363?)
Edit: There's always Juno DSL (or accelerated dial up) if you need it.

 | Oh, that's a pretty nifty tool. I'll check it out.
Looks like Juno doesn't offer service in my area either :/ |

I don't remember Douglaston being so excluded |
|
 | That's even stranger. We and Little Neck even share the same library. I input someone else's phone number in my town since I don't have a phone line, and it says they don't service this area? Hmm... |

They do have dialup..but that requires a phone line |

3 edits | reply to guest567 yeah, I'm dreading FiOS in my part of Queens. I have Verizon DSL $30/mo for years, then they raised it to $40/mo for no reason, and I'm sure they'll drop me as soon as FiOS here. what a scam these cable companies are
Every bill I'm about to change to TWCable for their Basic Data plan $30/mo, but I hate that company more than I dislike Verizon.
supposedly you can get Verizon DSL 1.0m for $25/mo but my guess is once FiOS in your area, DSL is gone.
I may just downgrade my 3.0 service to 1.0 then wait for the day FiOS comes to ruin it. |

My former ISP, »www.speakeasy.net, used to encourage users to share connections with neighbors. They even offered to do the monthly billing once the primary user set it up. |

I suppose the NYC PUC hasn't heard this. Verizon cannot really force folks to take an ONT and the associated inconvenience and requirement to power their 'local loop' as long as they are a regulated monopoly providing traditional POTS service. Perhaps they only meant DSL wouldn't be sold, but the individual could still maintain copper dialtone?
Pretty egregious on Verizon's part if you asked me... |

So your options are: FiOS Cable Dial-up (assuming you have an analog phone line, which you probably do not) WISP (Wireless) -- Lightning Bolt Technologies |

| reply to guest567 why don't you switch to TWC, i know they have promotions each time regarding their rates. It comes out to 28.99 if you sign up for paperless statement. You get a 1 dollar credit each month. Also since you are coming from FIOS, i'm sure they will give you a good deal.
However be warn that some areas there are over-saturation and you get drop packets. I used to have them, and now i have switched over to fios. I rather pay a bit more money and have a stabler and faster internet connection. |

watice join:2008-11-01 New York, NY | reply to guest567 Verizon has been pulling copper from FIOS areas for a while now, and replacing it with fiber because they can provide POTS over fiber if the subscriber just can't live without the added fees they're accustomed to (FCC, line charges, USF, etc)
I've used Metconnect over a decade ago, and remember it being pretty unstable, even for a free dialup isp. Are you currently on 15/5 fios? I'd ask the retention ppl at vz first what they can do to lower your bill before switching up anything. |
|
 | The copper plant remains... Only subscriber connections are removed once they switch. |

anyone speedtest >5Mbps anyone on copper speedtest >5Mbps ???
I upgraded my speed from the old 3 to the new 3-7 but verizon didn't send me a new aDSL-2 modem, rather stuck me with the same old aDSL modem they sent me 8 years ago.
is there a way to find out if my CO even has aDSL-2 routers? if I get an aDSL-2 modem on my own, and have a good mile of copper between me and my CO, can I expect to get any more speed out of my service?
I guess my main question is, does anyone here in NYC with residential copper service see speeds in the 5-7 range, ever! or should I just be glad I'm paying for 3-7 and getting 5, while others here pay for 3-7 and suffer with under 3 speeds. |
