[WEATHER] Gonna be real cold tonight, not used to this!

Says it will be, what, 6 degrees in the Litchfield hills tonight? The coldest I remember it getting down in TN was 10 degress warmer than that. I am shivering already. Still, I'll take this over the horrible summers down in TN!

We've lucked out with no snow so I know I have no right to complain, so I'm not complaining, just saying wow, this coldness is new to me.

Roommate told me it gets down into the minus plenty.

We heat mostly with firewood so looks like I need to set the alarm to wake me up tonight since the fire only lasts for a couple hours. Down in TN we heated the whole house by wood and ran out and only had electric in our bedrooms. Pipes often froze and it always scared me a pipe would burst. But here, woa, no way can you let it freeze.

I keep my room between 55 and 62 generally, what temps do you guys keep your place at? Our thermostat is set to 50 because oil costs so much...

I take it gas is the cheapest way to heat?

Welcome to Connecticut...just be glad you're not in Montana.

Average lows mid-January are typically mid-teens, and it's not uncommon to get an occasional single-digit low. You'll see one or two days this month that'll show zero or a couple degrees negative first thing in the AM, but that's a sure sign that we've peaked and we're about to head downhill. From mid-January you'll see a gradual rise in temps.

What is unusual is the lack of snow. Ignoring the freak Halloween snowstorm, in the 20 years I've been in CT I don't think I've seen us go this long into winter without at least a small snowstorm. but i'm pretty OK with that...

I know a lot of people love, even need snow, that there are businesses like Woodbury Ski and Racket that depend upon it, but in all sincerity, I see snow as being behind motor vehicle wrecks and a lot of human suffering. I remember one night as a teen coming home from a concert in CT, going down the big hill, we did a fishtail that went around and around about 4 times. We pulled out of it unscathed, but we could have died just as easily.

When I lived in snowy Ithaca, NY I had to ride my bicycle and I can't tell you how many times I wiped out and was almost run over. But motorists are really mean to cyclists, I had cars hit me while passing by, knocking me over and wiping me out. They would just race away and I swear some of them were laughing, the sick Fs. Riding a bike in the snow is dangerous, but when you have no other choice, you do what ya gotta do.

I lived 5 miles from the job and there was no other way than to walk, and boss would call me in without notice and warn me if I didn't get there quickly, he'd fire me, he was quite mean. I'd get called in during snow storms because the girls would whine and say they couldn't drive, so I got dumped on. But that was Ithaca, and the store is closed down now, due to poor management after I was gone.

I hope I don't have to start riding my bike in snow again...

Have a long walk in the morning, it's gonna be cold!

It was the first night the heat pump called the oil furnace for emergency heat.

Complain about the cold, complain about the snow, some people are never happy with the weather here in CT. Don't like having four weather seasons? Move to Florida or Arizona.

I remember when this weather persisted for six weeks at a time, interrupted only by outbreaks of even colder weather.

This will be gone Thursday afternoon.

Keeping the bedrooms at 74F in the evening, 70 during day.
Downstairs is the opposite.
The upper floor heat pump thought it couldn't make it and called for additional oil heat instantly in the 8F range - although it handled 10F with 100% duty cycle. Wished it was set to call for auxiliary at lower temperatures since running heat pumps is so much cheaper than oil. But then below 10F is a 2-3 times/winter occurrence.

I remember much warmer times, and can't believe this extreme cold will last so long.

AZ its a dry heat.

Plus with the drought it truly hasn't rained or snowed in the mountains as much as past decades. It can get cold in the mountains here also.
Record low: Arizona -40 Jan. 7, 1971 Hawley Lake 8,180
Recod high: 128°, Fahrenheit. This record high was recorded on June 29, 1994 at Lake Havasu City.

Think we have CT beat on both numbers.

Visit AZ yearly due to having several family members there. Asked family member out there one day why no one was outside in the middle of the day, reply was it was too hot, my response, but I thought you said it was "just" dry heat out here. It was 105 that day. Edit to add: And I've also asked them; if its a "dry heat", why the need to run AC's during the day in both home and car.

Told them last fall when they complained about driving through a "haboob" or two out there; So what, we get hurricanes, earthquakes and ice storms, all within a month or so of each other out here.

What is your thinking on snow boarders? (heh heh)

Well, warmer today, looks like no snow for another week.

What bothers me about the idea of snow is having to trudge through the backyard after it snows just to get firewood. The firewood is about 50 feet from the house.

Also, my heart condition isn't the best so shoveling always worries me, though I realize the exercise is good for me.

Has there ever been a winter without any snow? (I doubt that, but what the heck, why not ask.)

The closest I can remember to a nice, totally snow free Winter is the Winter of 2001-2002. We had one storm, it came on the weekend, and it was only about 2 inches. I loved that Winter!

Though the idea of none at all sounds even better to me!

For a number of years, I snowboarded and skied. A couple of our ski friends have kids who want to board. I was thinking of picking up a cheap used board and getting back into it every so often.

I hate snowboarders. Not only they (most of them) have poor control, they also ruin the slopes with the boards.
