[AT&T] How do I get off my parent's plan and keep my number?

I currently am on my parent's plan and the contract for my phone will run out soon. I want to upgrade my phone and start a new contract in my name. I want to keep my current number and hopefully be eligible for a discounted upgrade. How would I go about doing this?

I don't know about AT&T but on Verizon all you have to do is do an "assumption of liability" for the account. Just call and say that you want to assume liability for the account and have your p[arent there. They will talk to both of you and you can assume the account. The upgrade qualification stays with the account so you will still be eligible for the upgrade pricing. And you keep your phone number.

Of course, as I said, that is Verizon. I would assume that AT&T would do the same thing but I can't be sure.

Depending on your credit score you may have to put up some money.

It won't be a new contract. It'll be the same contract under a different name. Each line has a different contract and upgrade eligibility.

I did this back in 2004 and i had to pay a $18 fee to AT&T. My contract was with Cingular so I don't know if they changed things when they bought AT&T mobile.

I found the key to success but somebody changed the lock.
