1 edit | reply to diskace No you can't use the same modem, you will need to buy a docsis modem (Internet) and a ATA adapter (phone) from ElectronicBox.
I know for phone that you need to contact Ebox first, as you will loose your phone number if you call Videotron first to cancel.
I personally run two internet connection to have 0 downtime. will call my old provider tomorrow to cancel, but it was on DSL. I would think you can make the same for cable.

eboxnat join:2011-05-06 Montreal, QC kudos:3 | reply to vidmtl29 Hey there!
Switching from the company you are with now to us is really easy, and has little to no downtime. In this case we ask that you do not officially cancel your current services but only assure there will be no penalties for leaving.
We will contact them to plan the installation on a day that will suit you and the technician will either simply add a splitter to your current setup so the telephone services will still continue to be active or completely remove it if you plan on canceling that as well.
No rental modem from them can be activated with our services (or any other TPIA), you would need a new modem. |

| reply to diskace Just wanted to touch base. Usually, when I want to pick a service company, I send them a question through their contact form with an average question (i.e. not too dumb, no too technical). Then I wait and see what comes back, assuming it does. Some don't care to reply and obviously don't get my business. You did, so count me in.
Thanks |

| All right so my Ebox cable got activated tonight at last, sadly my profile was apparently set to 8/1 and not 30/2 as I had ordered.
Will have to call ebox tomorrow and see if this can be fixed... |

 | One more question, why is there a charge of $20 if we decide to use our own modem? |
|
 zorxd join:2010-02-05 Quebec, QC | it's a disguised activation fee |
|
eboxnat join:2011-05-06 Montreal, QC kudos:3 | said by zorxd:it's a disguised activation fee Something like that, we get charged close to 100$ for any new cable install, in the case that a client choses to purchase the modem from us the small profit helps offset that silly fee.
When a client does not choose to purchase our modem or already has a working modem, there is that 20$ fee.
Some people really hate it, and its understandable, but unfortunately its here to stay :P |
|
zorxd join:2010-02-05 Quebec, QC | I think you should raise your activation fee by $20, drop the modem price by $20, and remove this $20 fee when you have your own modem. If you keep the rules to complex, people hate it. Just look at Bell.
Just my 2 cents. |

eboxnat join:2011-05-06 Montreal, QC kudos:3 | Another DSLr-er has this same opinion but it was not a popular one, we do not think it is fair to have all of our clients pay more for the very few that either already have a modem or want to find a deal elsewhere.
Sorry that we do not agree with you :P |

Sorry that we do not agree with you :P I think the last guy had a different suggestion. What the above poster is suggesting (and I agree) is to change how the pricing is shown. In the end, it will all still be the same pricing.
Here are some examples.
Current own modem installation costs: $50 + $20 = $70 Suggested own modem installation costs: $70 Current D2 modem installation costs: $50 + $75 (+$15) = $125 ($140) Suggested D2 modem installation costs: $70 + $55 (+$15) = $125 ($140) Current D3 modem installation costs: $50 + $99 (+$15) = $149 ($164) Suggested D3 modem installation costs: $70 + $79 (+$15) = $149 ($164)
Also, on a sort of related note, since there still isn't a database to file bug reports, I'll post it here. On the cable page, clicking on the "Details" tab for Speedcable Extreme 15/30/60 shows that you can buy a Standard modem (D2) for $75. I guess a D2 modem can technically work at 15 or 30 Mbps, although it'll likely be a bit slow and get your neighbours a little annoyed with you. |
|
 | reply to eboxnat said by eboxnat:for the very few that either already have a modem or want to find a deal elsewhere. The "very few who already have a modem" may soon become legion now that the floodgates that have been keeping "DSLR-class" subscribers off anything remotely related to Videotron have started crumbling... every modem you are selling to new subscribers today is one more potential modem that may come back as second-hand later, to which you need to add modems sold by other TPIA ISPs. This is going to be tens of thousands of new modems in the wild by the time the year is over if ISPs start pushing Videotron-TPIA with the new tariffs.
There are "very few who already have a modem" for now mainly because interest in Videotron-TPIA was practically non-existent prior to 2011-703. |

grunze510 got my idea right. |
|
eboxnat join:2011-05-06 Montreal, QC kudos:3 | reply to InvalidError I do see what you (and grunze and zorxd) are all saying, for now there are no plans to look into modifying that fee.
I'll be honest and say I didn't read the post by zorxd 100% (can I blame a brain fart?!?) and understood he meant something completely different.
Now that I reread, I see it is a pretty cool ideal. I will make sure the people who can make those decisions get wind of this suggestion, but until there is more than "very few" people who are activated with their own modems it is not something that will be focusing on right now.
Sorry I may of come off as harsh! |

| reply to zorxd I would suggest instead:
Installation only: $70 Installation + D2 modem: $125 Installation + D3 modem: $149
Shipping for new modem: $15.00
You should also put instructions on how users can check if they actually own a modem.
Personally, I might also just remove docsis2 modems from the list and put it in fine print at bottom of page "older docsis2 modems allowing speeds on up to 10mbps (or whatever) are available for $125 with installation). |
