GPU Upgrade Time

This is what I have: »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···14127422 , nothing fancy. Looking to upgrade to a low/mid level gfx card.

1) must be nvidia
2) would love it to be less than $150 (cheaper the better though)
3) i do tend to favor evga, but not necessary

i'm not in a hurry so i will be waiting around for a sweet deal, i havent been paying attn to gfx scene recently, so im out of it, your help is greatly appreciated

thanks.

What exactly are you trying to do with the card? Any games you are trying to play? What resolution?

Mainly just WoW and MW3 and any other game that catches my fancy. 1600x900 resolution

Should be fine for MW3 and WoW.

HOWEVER, Radeon just released its new 7000 series, and nVidia is no doubt following up with its 600 series as an answer in the coming weeks/months, so I would wait a couple of weeks to see what happens in terms of the GPU market.

You are considering a product at the tail-end if its generational life.

When you have a set budget, it's a pretty easy decision. You buy the card with the biggest number you can on it for the money have to spend.

The 550ti is an excellent card at that price point. A very nice leap in performance from where you are now and it gets you DX11. Yes, new cards are around the corner, but the next card up, the 560, I seriously doubt is going to come down to your budget number. Yes, that's just my opinion, but I don't see it dropping that much.

Could you save $20 or so on the 550ti by waiting? Maybe. Who knows. Timing is up to you, but with all things computer, if you wait for the new stuff to come out, you will find yourself doing nothing but waiting. lol

On NCIX there was a GTX 560 Ti by Galaxy that was $150 or so after rebate which is a steal for that card. If you need something that is $150 including tax you may find some 6870s at that price.

Because its successor is coming out next month, and the top end 7000s are already out. At this point I'd wait:

Not to bash on you specifically, Kris, but something I have found kinda funny over the past 10 years or so is that on any forum / message board when someone asks about upgrading a GPU or CPU...heck...any part really, there are always a lot of "xxxxx is coming soon - I'd wait" replies.

If we all waited because something newer was coming out soon, we'd all still be using 486's with 1MB Trident cards. I know when I was soliciting advice for my last build, I received a fair share of "xxxx is out, wait until then" and then when that product showed up and new advice threads were posted, it was the same stuff all over again with telling people to wait until the next thing was available.

I received a lot of replies about waiting until Bulldozer came out when I was looking for an upgrade to my aging Phenom x4. I didn't wait..I built a Z68 motherboard & i5 2500k based system instead of waiting for the turd that Bulldozer would eventually become.

My whole thought on the matter is that there will ALWAYS be something new coming down the pipeline and if you wait for it...you'll never actually upgrade from what you have now.

Fair point, but the current generation has been out over a year and you have mere weeks to wait for the new stuff. That's different than months, or the better part of a year.

The latest generation will also be debuting at $250 for the 7870 and $225 for the 7850. Neither of which are in his budget.

Which means the current generation products in that price range will drop in price to the OP's budget.

... The current Gen are in his price range. The 7xxx price drops happened already about a month ago. The 6870, that I linked, is within his budget and is the best bang for the buck right now in that range.

Unless you're buying an AMD Radeon 7000 series, you should wait to buy a GPU right now. $150 should be able to get you cards that are in the $250 range in a few weeks . . .

And with Ivy Bridge coming in April . . . anyone thinking about building a system might want to wait.
