Re: Live sync'ing software

well with the right switches Xcopy can be set to only copy updated files

though Xcopy might have to be tested to see what it would do with open files

yes, transactions do not come in at a regular interval. there may be times when there isnt any, say over the weekend and off peak times, and then there are times where we are slammed. I need something that I dont have to babysit and needs to be live.

you could test Xcopy
I think it might just skip the active files

then you could set it to run every 5-10 min

Robocopy would do this just fine ... set it up on a schedule to run and away you go.

Sync Toy actually works really well but it doesn't do a live sync as files are updated over time. Works great manually though.

i have been wanting to spend some time and research this topic (replication over WAN), but i have not had any time.

i have been reading about rsync.

looks good, but i havent found any applications that do what i want.

i really like MS synctoy but i wish there was an option for that program to run as a service and have a live sync option.

EDIT-

i used syncrify, but i dont think i was able to setup a \\servername\share name

EDIT2- i dont think it was working properly in w7 (my main PC), but i had no issues with syncrify on my test PC (windows XP, off site, located at a relatives house).

with windows XP mode, syncrify worked on w7. i think i had the 2.x version and not 3.0. 3.0 looks new (i just re-visited their website).

I have been using allway sync for a few days now and it seems to be working.

Here's a link to it »allwaysync.com/ I'm using the free version and installed it on a server after testing it on my pc. Running in well in Server 2008 x64 and sync'ing live as changes come in.

i just installed allway sync, but i am trying to configure it with another computer, off site, and i have no clue where to start.

do i need to open ports on the other router (the off site location) to talk to allway sync?

For starters you will need to see shares on the offsite computer where you are. You might need to set up a vpn connection or something. From there it is just a few settings to get started. It guides you thru in the setup but basically you are telling the software the source folder and the destination folder and then just how to handle conflicts etc. If you let it run and watch it for a bit it will prompt you and give you suggestion as it run across conflicts.

oh ok, stop right there...no VPN to the other site (which is why syncrify was nice).

i dont have a VPN to the other site.

thanks for the reply back.

Have a look at SureSync.

If you use their client as a target (versus FTP or UNC) then it can encrypt and compress the data.

I've used it for many years. For the most part it is very reliable. But there have been a couple of occasions where it just wouldn't work. When that happened I found their support to be top notch. Pricing isn't terrible.

is there software that i can install on two PCs, 1 at location A and 1 at location B and have it securely sync data from A to B?

i dont need it to be a two way sync (from B to A) B would be my backup that is off site. ideally i would like a real time sync for anything in a specific folder(s) on A to mirror at location B.

with syncrify, i just opened up ports and the program did the rest. no VPN needed. off hand, i am not sure if the version i had was sending it securely, but that is a must.

You could use DFS and move the DB files to one of the namespace member folders...

Of course, you probably need to bring the DB down while you move the DB files to the new local folder, but after that DFS will take care of the replication.
