 | Slow connection / High CRC every night For several months I've been dealing with signal problems in the over-night hours. Initially it would begin every night after about midnight, but lately it starts about 6PM.
I've had DSL here for about 7 years and have dealt with this issue several times before. Each time it has been nearly impossible to find a tech that will do anything because when they come out and check it during the day, the line is fine.
It's not an internal problem, I've tried connecting the modem at the NID and get the same results. It ranges anywhere been 1 to several hundred CRC errors per second. This morning my modem reports 759,543 CRC errors since 11 PM last night and 8 AM this morning (the highest I've ever seen).
The SN Margin during the day is usually 10 or 11, at night it's usually 6 to 8.
Of course the download speed suffers significantly, sometimes as slow as only a few KB/s from speedtest.net.
Using a Motorola 2210 modem. I've also tried an Actiontec modem, it's better than the Motorola but not enough.
How do I find a tech that can actually help? |

By any chance is there noise on your phone line at night? If so, call voice line repair. Fixing the POTS, in this case, could also fix DSL. -- TCE Weather |

 | I don't have any outdoor lights on.
I put in a "noise/static on the line" ticket yesterday (I do have a constant hum over the phone). They closed the ticket saying it was repaired but there was zero improvement. |
|
 | Let me add that the phone "hum" is present all day, not just at night, and also at the NID test jack.

Heck, there was a DSL problem here a few years ago of a noise source (not a light) that was blocks away, but still affected the DSL in a huge radius around it.
Hum is power line influence caused by poor grounding or bonding. Do you have the hum at your NID as well? |
|
 | Yes I get hum when I plug into the NID test jack. |
|
 | reply to d_l I have a similar problem to OP and never thought something like a failing light could do that. I'm sorry if I shouldn't be posting here, let me know if I should make a new thread.
Anyways, there is a street light outside that I've been meaning to call about for months, it times it shuts off every 30 seconds and powers back on. I only experience internet problems after dark (6pm) and they remain until 5am.
Its to the point that I can't stream football games on espn3 at night, but during the day, my stream has no problem. |

| That street light could definitely be the cause of your problem. If a call to the city authorities fails to get it fixed, you might recruit a young boy with a BB rifle to put it out of its misery (of course, I'd never suggest you do anything so illegal). -- Jim Kyle |

 | Centerpoint came out today and fixed the light, no more issues with my internet.

 | This is ALL LIE. I never had problem with outdoor light which is about block away on neighbor's apartment, never caused ANY PROBLEM so far, just since 2 days ago, my PRO DSL is slowing down at night only, our house lights are all turned OFF, except campfire thing on downstair where half dead wood is burning, actually started that fire since new year, but I don't think I had this problem before 2days ago. MY modem is upstair in my room and directly connected with ethernet cable to my pc.. And yes I did call rep and all they did was some basic stuff and bullcrap like put modem above 3feet what the hell.. it is connected to my pc with ethernet cable and my floor is made of wood and there is no humidity in my house, I told them and but they still forced me to do it, and of course, nothing was fixed. My house is a lot far away from street light, we are one of those houses located on the corner, but the neighbor's apartment cross the fence might use mercury-vapor light, but if that was the reason, why the hell it been working fine so far, just don't make sense. ATNT stop lying and seriosly tell us what is going on. I ain't getting new plan or even new modem, if this is intention by your money ripping method. FIX IT BACK TO NORMAL. |

Some people call it lies and their DSL still doesn't work. I'd advise those to not expect any DSL improvement. -- TCE Weather |
