| Troubleshooting advice for WoW disconnects My home office setup is as follows: Comcast broadband *Scientific Atlanta Modem *Edgewater Router --Laptop --Phone --Linksys WRT610 (this router is configured for OpenDNS for safeguarding the internet) ______My game rig (Win7 64bit) ______My wife's game rig (win7 64bit) ______Any/all wireless connections (PS3, etc)
For the most part, we have no issues gaming. However, we have yet to complete an LFR without both of us getting kicked off the servers at nearly the same time (During Madness most of the time, Spine/Ultraxion/Hagara sometimes). Most of the time, only the game client crashes... although there have been a couple instances of Vent going down as well.
I'm looking for some advice in how to troubleshoot this problem. -- Immergruen (resto/kitty) on Nathrezim Server (US) Guild leader for Pride and Ego "You never truly know someone... until you fight them"

 | Turn off or unplug all other network equip during playing time. Run a ping to your DNS server and Gateway and pipe output to txt file. If you disconnect you will be able to tell if it outside or inside your network. Check for usage caps on Comcast. Update your linksys firmware.
PS your vent does get lagged out when it happens... |

Thank you. I suppose Vent is just better at re-connecting. I know that I can normally still tell my guildie, "oh crap... my client is crashed... relogging now". |

| reply to Immer Here's a scenario we had.
We never had this issue happen at home, but we had spent a year in our raid at the time and we had intended to go to the beach during the same week as when we wanted to take down Illidan. Like good little nerds, we took our rigs with us and found out that the connection we had down there was garbage. Our stuff would constantly disconnect during the highest amount of network traffic, was right when shit got hectic during a raid.
So, you could be pegging out your pipe. We got a little relief by closing out vent. It was still bad, but not as bad. You could try eliminating other sources of bandwidth usage. -- A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have. -MLK |

 | Some of those modems have a admin page that displays info. You can also try opening that up and see if it show anything different during heavy game play. Basically you have to determine where the disconnect happens. Most likely the ISP, the modem or your router. |

| reply to Immer As the anon said - during your next session you each should do the following:
ping -t 4.2.2.2
and
ping -t your.gateway.ip.address
in two different command windows for the entirety of the raid. See if neither, one or both of the pings flatline.
Also ensure mods like Recount are disabled. -- flickr | Of faith, power and glory |

demirPremium join:2010-07-15 usa 2 edits | reply to Immer Next time you have a disconnect like you are taking about, you should check the modem to see if it dropped out. Most of them have a series of lights that indicate a good connection. That will tell you if the problem is your ISP or the modem itself. They'll blink slowly or be off for minute or so when they drop out.
If you are not seeing the modem drop out, then the culprit might be your wireless. Some wireless routers can't handle all the traffic. I've had good success with open source firmware or adjusting the QoS settings.
When you say it crashes, do you mean it simply disconnects and you get the wow login screen? Or does the whole game crash out to windows? Do you have to start it again (or reboot the machine?)
If it's one of the latter, i'd say the problem isn't your connection. |

Do you have to start it again (or reboot the machine?) The wow client freezes (sometimes our toons can keep moving but toolbars are on full GCD lock down and nothing is updating for a few seconds before they freeze). Screen goes white (Not responding). So we force the program to close, then restart the program and log back in (fastest way to get back online and into the fight before a wipe).

Can you post a speed test? If I use the speed test from the Comcast website, my results are blisteringly fast »results.speedtest.comcast.net/re···7782.png .
However... the speed test from dslreports show something a bit different:

demirPremium join:2010-07-15 usa | reply to Immer This doesn't sound like a connectivity issue to me. Hard wire to the modem and see what happens. If it still occurs but the modem lights are good, you have a software or driver issue. |

| said by demir:you have a software or driver issue. I've put this possibility to the bottom of the list mainly because both machines are having the problem, within seconds of each other... hers is running AMD/ATI and I'm running Intel/Nvidia and we have updated drivers. But if I "hit the wall" then that will have to be the best bet.
I want to thank everyone for your help. I'll be messing with this on and off for the rest of the weekend. -- Immergruen (resto/kitty) on Nathrezim Server (US) Guild leader for Pride and Ego "You never truly know someone... until you fight them"

demirPremium join:2010-07-15 usa | Could be the wow client has a bug that triggers at the same time.
Remove the wireless from the equation and check if the modem drops out. It'll help you isolate software or connection. |

matt5 join:2001-10-06 Lagrangeville, NY | reply to Immer As said, the easiest thing to do, ping your routers and a outside server like google.com.
If you see packets drop, you have found the issue...
you to router = issue inside your network, you can and should fix, issue to google router fine = issue outside your network... call tech support but o well.
lol @ not enough upload... /facetrain
I would really not waste time d/cing crap when it could be outside network issues. |
|
demirPremium join:2010-07-15 usa | Outside connectivity issues would crash the wow client to the point of freezing?
Every time my ISP or the route across the internet had a hiccup I'd get disconnected in wow, but never a hard freeze like the OP describes. |
|
matt5 join:2001-10-06 Lagrangeville, NY | Um, yes, if the client can not handle what it is getting / not getting.
Kinda funny, back when my ISP was doing upgrades, I would lag out on vent, games would crash or lock up... because I was dropping packets like a bitch.
Seeing as I did nothing (pinged google, lost packets, router was not losing any) and if fixed its self... imma go with......... outside issues! |
|
 | reply to Immer usually the first place to start is disabling all your wow addon's / delete your Cache folder and see what happens then. |
