 | [DW7000] Unexplained Download Usage Drains?? Hi,
I need your help please.
I just bought 2 laptops, one for me and one for my wife. They are identical laptops. They both run Windows 7 64bit OS. When I turn on my laptop but don't start any programs, after a short while, my Hughes download usage begins to drain rapidly; this doesn't happen with my wifes computer. The lights on the modem begin to blink rapidly and the allowance drains. If I disconnect my computer from the Internet, the drain on my download allowance stops and begins to restore quickly.
I have tuned off automatic update in windows and looked for some program that could be causing the problem. I am temporarily using McAfee Virus/Internet protection until I can load Kaspersky on it.
I don't know what or how to find out what is running on my computer to cause this and really would appreciate some advice.
We live fulltime in our Motor Home and I use a Hughes DW7000 Modem and D2 controller.
Thanks,
Recliner22 DW7000; D2 |

| Well if you unplug the computer and it stops then you are right that it has to be the computer. Try googling for a program that reports what is using the internet on your computer, I know there are some because I have seen people talk about it, but I havn't ever had the need for one and thus can't tell you anymore than that. -- HughesNet elite plan/.74 dish w/1watt trans. / 9000 modem / 3 computers on a linksy's wired network |

 | I had the same problem when I got a new computer,I installed a good firewall that let nothing in unless I gave it permission. I found out that one of the biggest offenders was windows media player. After a week of alarms from various programs seeking permission to connect to the internet, things settled down and I was able to disengage the firewall and use the regular windows firewall. I used "windows 7firewall control" available at Major Geeks.com |

 | reply to Recliner22 Look for the Windows Updates thread (should still be on Page 1 here I think) and make the change to BITS in your registries. You'll never have to worry/wonder about WU again as it will only DL during FAP-free time. |

 | reply to Recliner22 Thanks to everyone who has made suggestions so far, I'll follow up with them and hope they work for me. |

 | reply to Recliner22 It's me again. Well, I created the Bits file and loaded it on my computer as described in the Windows Update thread. Sofar, fingers crossed, the download bleeding has stopped. Yea! |
|
 | reply to Recliner22 I don't know for sure if the Bits file did the trick, but I'm hoping this is a long term fix. |
|
 | There may have been some downloads "in queue" or something, but if you've told BITS to limit to FAP-free hours, then you're done. If you want to confirm e.g. that there are downloads "waiting" for the FAP-free period, I think the freeware BITS Download Manager from codeplex will show you the current status. |

 | reply to Recliner22 Could be Norton or whatever virus program came with it also. Norton started downloading updates and new version as default eating up a ton on me a few years ago. |

Yep @direcway.com | reply to Recliner22 Maybe this will help?
