Not all ISPs will require a price hike. For some ISP with lots of aunts and grand mothers, their costs may in fact be going down, so they won't announce any price change and will pocket the difference.

Don't know about Acanac or Velcom specifically. But if too many Angelos move to them, then they may have to jack up pricing.

Acanac is waiting for Distrbutel to tell them the price they must charge.

Acanac may be an interesting study.

Their cable service is obviously amalgamated with 3webs so they have a combined capacity purchase and average out the angelos against aunts and grand mothers. So they will have the same costs.

But **if** Acanac's DSL is still separate from 3web and distributel, then it would be possible that Acanac's costs are different if they cater to a different mix of angelo vs aunts&grand mothers.

we all know ACanac cable is basically distributel cable but if Acanac used distributel prices... then i woudln't be getting 24Mbps cable for $39,99 versus distrubutel's high 40's / low 50's price

My guess is that you're on a 1 year contract with Acanac, otherwise the price is pretty much the same. Distributel 15Mbps is 49.95 and Acanac 24Mbps is 51.95.

As for the speed difference, that's only because Distributel is still giving their customers Motorola SB5101's instead of a D3 modem.

From what I've heard the Acanac DSL is still a separate service from Distributel.

While it might still be a separate service (I'm not sure), Acanac is still owned by Distributel, so they probably have the final say on things now.

Given that Distributel is grandfathering all the old rates, the chance of Acanca prices remaining the same is pretty high.

I received the following email from Velcom tonight about their new rates.

-------------------------
Dear Valued Customer,

As you may know, recent changes to the law have been enacted by the
Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). The
CRTC is the government regulatory agency that oversees our Industry.

CRTC has now allowed the incumbents to begin billing on a model called
"Capacity Based Billing". If left to stand, this billing model will ensure
that residential Internet service prices will increase as consumer usage
increases in the future.

All bandwidth that passes through third party providers such as Velcom will
now bring additional cost. This decision was approved in late November
2011 and will take effect on 1 February 2012.

These changes are beyond our control and will affect the cost of providing
you with the reliable service you have come to expect from us. Although
these changes in the law will have an affect, we have done our best to
minimize how it will affect you.

Other than a small price increase, you will see no changes to the quality
and reliability of the service we provide to you, our respected customer.

All of us here at Velcom are assisting in any manner we can to have this
decision changed just as their previous attempt at "usage based billing",
as we feel these methods of billing are not in the best interests of our
customers.

This current price increase is certainly not desirable, but it is far less
dramatic than the announcements made in early 2011.

New rates effective ( February 1, 2012 )

Nice prices from Velcom. I like how they dont lump all their customers into a heavy use plan and force them to suck it up like Teksavvy did.

We didnt want to make it to disruptive for customersincluding our wholesalers.

We have heavy users also but this should make it easier for everyone.

I just signed up for the 25/7 service knowing it would be 59$/month I only had the service for 5 days and now they tell me It's going up by 15$/Month?!?!?
Knowing that I would have never signed up.
It would also be nice to know if there is a cable service in quebec or i'm stuck with bell.
Right now Electronic box cable seems to be the most interesting.

I think for the 25/7 in the old prices, you need to add 10$/mo for the modem rental from Bell that is mandatory (»velcom.ca/moreinfo.htm). The new 25/7 price possibly includes the modem rental.

Whats your Account ID so i can take a look at your account.

I don't recall offering a 25/7 plan for $59. I could be wrong though as we revised our prices once or twice.

$73.95 is our unlimited plan

there is no modem rental fee included in that.

our 25/7 400Gb plan will be going down in price. current price is $56.95 we anticipate it will be around $51 then $10 on top of that for modem rental.

I took a look at our old plans and I don't see any plans for $59 unless you're talking about DryDSL which needs to include the dry loop. Our price for 25/7 is $56.95 + modem rental + dry loop if you have dry loop

same applies to the unlimited plan.

So new price would be around $51 for 25/7 plus loop plus modem rental. How are you getting $59 ?

sorry it was the:
57.95$
Up to 25 Mbps Download Speed
Up to 7 Mbps Upload Speed
UNLIMITED TRAFFIC
5 Email Accounts
Dynamic IP Address
Free Web Hosting 100 MB
U do get my point.
It's 16$ just right there.
Right now also pay +10$ modem rental + 10$ dryloop.

Has not been a secret for a long time now. Acanac is part of the
group of Distributel companies.

How will this affect the old unlimited plan at $29? This is my question too.

Any Velcom customers got 5M to 6M upgrade yet? Mine is still 5M and I know my line can handle stable 6M profile. Is it time to open a ticket with Bell (via Velcom) to upgrade?

I am with Velcom old 29/month unlimited 5Mbps plan as well and I have a question which I sent Velcom via email buy haven't received an answer yet. Maybe Velcomrob can clarify this to us:

- If we, who are currently with unlimited plans, decide to move to 400 GB plans trying to match costs, how much will be the extra GB in case we go over the 400 GB limit? They did not mention that in their email.

Many thanks to anyone who might know the answer and want to share with us here.

Cheers,

I read in another forum Velcom is waiting for Bell's final word on the price rules on Jan 20th before they can provide more information to us.

Hopefully that is true and Velcom will send more details / options after Jan 20th.

Cheers!

I feel like Velcom went out of business. I emailed them to ask questions.....no response. Looks like people were getting more responses in this thread....but no more. So frustrating.

Try to open a ticket. I always get prompt and pretty helpful responses to my tickets.

I would suggest Velcom to have a new webmaster to update their website, it's not up-to-date.
