garcon join:2012-01-06 Alexandria, LA | Anyone have Suddenlink Fiber? Hi All,
My business is currently multihomed with a suddenlink cable account (almost all data goes through this) and an AT&T T1 (this captures email, remote access, VPN, ssh, etc).
We've had a lot of trouble with our T1 recently (AT&T keeps changing the freaking IP address, requiring a tech visit to fix) and it's just KILLING us. We can't afford to have our email offline for 6-8 hours a month, which is about what's happening. (Of course, the line is technically up, so AT&T isn't cutting us any slack on their SLA. That's freaking convenient.)
For various reasons, we have to host those services on site, and we've tried running them directly over cable (DSL, we even tried Satellite once), and it's never worked properly. We always end up back with the T1 line.
Does anyone have experience with Suddenlink Fiber? They've given us an okay quote for pulling glass to the office, and I think we're willing to give it a shot if the reliability is as good or better than AT&T. |

| didn't even know SL ran fiber to the property, lol.
regular cable (not fiber) to my area has been super, after i was able to get pete involved to fix the cable plant issues. has been over a year now.
and since you'll be getting a business account, should get a couple static ip nums and no port blocks. so you shouldn't have a problem w/ the servers |

 | reply to garcon We've got 50mb/8mb fiber from them I've been meaning to get some pictures put on here of the install, maybe tomorrow.
We're the guinea pigs in our town for it. It was a little bit of a headache getting setup (4th one in the county, 1st in our town) But once they got the configs set right on their end, it's been great. We've got "dedicated" bandwidth (which we should). It's a single strand of glass, using two separate frequencies for up and download (I think Gpon?)
We haven't had one single hiccup since install, although to be fair, we never had any hiccups with their cable service at the same location (other than falling trees taking out entire blocks of power-pole wiring). We were given 15 IPs with the fiber, and we currently host a slew of http/email services from it with no problem. |

| reply to garcon One of our vendors is using them as their provider at one of our remote sites. The turn up did take a couple of days, but haven't had anymore issues since. After the initial stress-testing it hasn't been used. It's primarily designed for redundancy/Disaster Recovery operations.
I believe that it's 10Mb/10Mb, not sure of the price. I do know that it's a flat fee not per GB. |

 | reply to garcon On AT&T issue why don't you complain to the Louisiana public service commission. |

 | reply to garcon Garcon, most of our customers are on suddenlink cable 12/2 with zero issues. We are beta testing their new gpon fiber service but have been having issues with equipment failures. That should be resolved this week. Depending on your location, it will be available withing the next month. The speeds will be 50/8. Also, you should be able to get Docsis 3 within the next two weeks or so. The new speeds will include 25/5 and 50/8. Shoot me a PM and I can help you get set up. |

 | reply to garcon GEPON is not the same as traditional fiber (note the unsyncronous speed) and is treated like a glorified cable modem. Depending on the Vendor, a GEPON's OLT is ether in the Head End or is in the node (same node you hear in cable modem talks) and rides the same fiber as the cable modems. (Fiber Plant for the RF network).
GEPON - example of one version of GEPON »www.huihongfiber.com/epon-gepon-ftth.html
Traditional fiber handoffs are far more stable. |

 | reply to garcon We have 5mb/5mb fiber from suddenlink in Flagstaff (Legacy NPG Market). We had an issue during the transition that we werent supposed to have and 2 issues since then, one major which caused a total outage and another peering issue with level 3 that caused some packetloss. Their support and follow up leaves me rather unimpressed. For us it was between qwest/centurylink and suddenlink and id choose suddenlink everytime. If there where other options on the table i would certianly consider those before suddenlink. |

tcgPremium join:2003-09-12 Lubbock, TX 1 edit | reply to garcon I just checked to see if GPON was available in Lubbock yet. I was told no, but that they could do Docsis 3 for me and quoted $250/mo for 20/5 and $350/mo for 50/8. I pay about $110/mo for 100/5 residential.
Damn. I was hoping that at some point Suddenlink's commercial pricing would become more reasonable. I understand some disparity between commercial and residential pricing, but this is ridiculous.
Edit: grammar |

 | Did you ask for Residential GePON or Commercial GePON? As far as I know they only offer it for commercial customers but I could have sworn i read that it was available in Lubbock. |

 | reply to garcon I've worked at two companies that have Suddenlink fiber (not PON but conventional synchronous fiber) and it's been pretty much rock solid.
The area I'm in is Bryan/College Station and prior to Suddenlink buying out the Cox franchise, the Cox technicians were really upgrading the area's networks well, and Suddenlink has continued that (can't say the same for their HD/Cable networks; that's been crap).
The only problems I've seen were once a core router issue that affected many of the cable modem and business fiber customers, so it was further north than the fiber connection itself.
I haven't yet had experience with their PON offerings but if they ever offer it here, based on the reliability that I've seen with their business fiber and with my personal 50mbit cable modem, I'd give it a whirl. |
