Re: [Extreme] Rogers won't activate non-Rogers DPC3825

The gateways offered by Rogers are reasonable modems ... but poor routers.

You can still get it put into bridge mode and use your own router.

It's a huge hassle getting an 'own modem' authorized on Rogers.

Good modem but crappy router according to most users. If you can the Cisco DPC3825 has a slightly better router and the modem functions are slightly more futureproofed as it supports up to 8 bonded channels on the downstream whereas the SMC only supports 4.

Gotta laugh at all the Yahoos on here bending over and taking it dry from Rogers. The whole world knows their SMC and Cisco Gateways are garbage.
Who in their right mind is going to shell out $200 for their N wireless Gateway and then put it in bridge mode? That's like buying a new car and disabling the engine.
Rogers is sitting back and laughing at all the butt kissing Rogers loving twits that don't have the balls to stand up and DEMAND that Rogers change their proprietary scumbag ways.

I got my 3rd party purchased SB6120 activated as a purchase modem a few months ago. It's not impossible but you'll probably get blocked at every turn by a wall of impatient, untrained CSRs. Fulfillment will refer you to technical support, technical support will refer you to customer service. When nobody knows how to do these things you'll go full circle.

Spoke to one lady who turned hostile and almost hung up on me when I said "you sorta have to trick the system into thinking its an SMC".

A few days later I called back and, by chance, the guy who answered had experience adding them before. Added and online less than 3 minutes later. God bless that guy.

elitefx they can force anything down your pipe when there's no backlash. How small is the number of people adding 3rd party purchase modems? Probably two hands times a hundred. Hardly enough to make noise.

I spoke to a few fulfilment managers (who also thought it was impossible) I said if you can't get my modem added within my first 30 days of service, the 2 year contract I just signed is over before it started. All of them seemed to sense urgency after that but were still clueless.

You are absolutely right my friend. This is why we need to complain endlessly to Rogers. We need to start FaceBook/Twitter campaigns. We need to complain to anybody and everybody who will listen. We need to let the world know about Rogers unethical business practices.
I complained to the CRTC. This was their reply April 20 2012:

Thank you for contacting the Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services (CCTS). The CCTS is an independent agency with a mandate to receive, facilitate the resolution of, and, if necessary, resolve eligible consumer and small business complaints relating to certain retail telecommunications services.

The scope of CCTS’ mandate is set out on our website: »www.ccts-cprst.ca

Unfortunately, this matter is not an eligible complaint within the meaning of our Procedural Code and is therefore not within the scope or mandate of the CCTS.

We have reviewed your complaint about: “Rogers to allow usage/activation of 3rd party Docsis 3 modems by Rogers HiSpeed Internet users. For Rogers to deliver the Rogers HiSpeed Internet "Express" tier to Docsis 2 modem users at the speed and data cap as currently advertised to the best of Rogers ability”. It is our assessment that the subject-matter of your complaint relates to general operating practice(s). Further to Section 4.3 of our Procedural Code, CCTS is not able to issue Recommendations and Decisions that directs or requires a service provider to change their operating practices and policies.

Therefore, the CCTS cannot process your complaint. The Procedural Code can be found at:

»www.ccts-cprst.ca/en/doc ··· ral-code .

We have forwarded your complaint to your TSP for their information.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your complaint, or anything contained in this correspondence, please do not hesitate to contact us.

There isn't really a Government organization that oversees retail services. The CRTC only deals with broadcasting services and competitive framework and the CCTS deals with billing and service disputes. So things like retail modem policies even though it follows wholesale, that's all up to the Corporations like Rogers and Bell.

Well I know that Rogers High Speed is throttling HTTP Speeds and Also FTP speeds its not network congestion its just them Throttling

I don't think its Fair your paying for a service and your not getting
that Speed oh yeah go to speed test site and it it show you are getting the speed but from 2am to 5pm speeds are very good downloading frm 5pm to 2am speeds are throttled or something is happening

But Speeds tests only make sense if you run them against servers in the same location as the seedbox. If you use the recommended test server (which will be close to you) then the results are useless.

By The way I don't use rtorrent clients so I don't care about that I just want my speed back that was getting for the past six month

these tech guy @ rogers they say I'm a certified Network Specialist
I know were not throttling your speed ETC ETC there full of shit

fook a 700mb when Throttled takes like 20minutes when not throttled takes like 2minutes

and BELL duz the same thing I was with them before Rogers and they did that to me also give me like 4 month off good traffic speeds
then boom throttled up the ass after

Like having a corvette with no wheels

Vote with your wallet... You don't have to get internet from Rogers... You don't like the policies they have, don't use them. Hell, there's even an argument to be made that you don't have to have internet (although that position is rapidly declining...)

From a technical point of view; Rogers providing the only equipment used on the network, makes managing and maintaining much easier.

When Bell starting allowing BYOD customers, troubleshooting loss of sync/low speed issues became much harder, as there was another, BIG variable involved... The CPE was no longer standard, nor was it a "known" device, that's operation could be compared to a known baseline.

Not saying it's a popular position to take, running a closed network; but for the few users that actually feel strongly enough about it to be an issue, well, Rogers is willing to take the heat, and maybe lose a few customers... I can see both sides - from a consumer's point of view, I want choice, and the ability to do what I want with "my" hardware... BUT - from a network tech/manager's point of view, there's a LOT of value in maintaining that closed network system.
