1 edit | [DSL] Thinking of Switching from Verizon DSL I currently have a 1500/380 Kb/s from Verizon, I am happy with its reliability, however that is the fastest speed they will offer to me do to my distance from the Central Office. I was thinking of switch back to the local cable company but I had very bad service from them and they now have bandwidth caps. When Looking around I discovered DSL Extreme offers a maximum plan of 3000/768Kbps for my area which is double what Verizon Offers . I very tempted to switch but am very afraid I wont get the speeds advertised, making the whole switch worth nothing do to verizon stating my line cant go over that 1.5 megabit speed. However the 1.5 megabit connection I have now is not cutting it anymore and I am fed up with it. I would sign up but the termination fees and monthly plan setup fee are to much for me to try and fall back to Verizon if needed.
TL;DR Have a 1.5mps Verizon connection, max they offer in my area. DSL Extreme offers 3mps maximum, skeptical that Ill get anywhere near that speed.
Any advice would be appreciated thanks. | | dslx_nick join:2011-12-24 Chatsworth, CA kudos:11 | I won't mince words here: if your distance really IS too far from the Central Office, then we probably won't be able to offer higher speeds. The speed caps on our offers aren't due to us being mean, but simple realistic expectations based on purely physical factors. We do as much line conditioning and optimization as we can, but sometimes the distance really is just too great.
We use a computerized system to estimate approximate distance to your predicted DSLAM... key word being 'estimate'. Sometimes the estimate is too generous, and the actual distance and other negative factors are greater. On the other hand, sometimes the estimate is too conservative, and we CAN get you greater speeds than the estimate system would predict.
If you had a Verizon tech go out to your location and measure the ACTUAL (not estimated) distance and physical factors of your connection, and he determined that you're too far out for a 3Mbps connection... then I'd trust him. On the other hand, if you just submitted a request to Verizon for an upgrade and they turned you down within a few minutes, then there's a very real chance we can get you a higher speed package. We're willing to push harder to get you a higher DSL speed than Verizon is.
Please feel free to PM me your contact info, or of course you can call in to talk to our sales dept. if you're interested.

A few months ago i was considering DSL extreme. SNAG i ran into is DSL extreme was only able to offer me 1 meg . A DSL extreme worker here tried to get me the 1.5 like i have with verizon but verizon would not budge and said my plan was grandfathered. There was nothing DSL extreme could do even though my line holds 1.5 fine. Verizon holds the cards unfortunately.
