 | Empathy IM and ICQ Anybody using Empathy as their chat program? It's supposed to work with multiple protocols including ICQ but no matter what I do I can't get it to connect. Have tried Pidgin and it works fine.
Any idea why Empathy won't connect? |

Empathy is just a front-end to Telepathy, and you need to have the appropriate Telepathy modules installed for the chat protocol(s) in question. |

Do you know which particular Telepathy modules are needed? I've checked Synaptic and a heap of modules are already installed, but there are some others that are not. I don't see anything there that has ICQ in the name (or refers to ICQ in the description). |

Could you paste what settings you are using and what the error is you are receiving? |

 | I set up my ICQ account in Empathy with the default settings:
Character set: ISO-8859-1 Server: slogin.icq.com Port: 5190
My ICQ number and password are correct (they work fine in Pidgin)
It should start and connect automatically on start up - it does start and attempt to connect, but never does. It just sits there forever trying to connect - no error message. Doesn't matter how long I wait it never connects. |

pkill telepathy-haze
HAZE_PERSIST=1 HAZE_DEBUG=all /usr/libexec/telepathy-haze 2>&1 | tee haze.log
There's also a debug option under the Help menu in Empathy as well.
Oddly enough I have having problems with MSN, and all that I needed to do was kill telepathy-butterfly and let Empathy restart it by reconnecting. |

I started Empathy which started trying to connect as usual, then I ran your command above at which point Empathy immediately disconnected, then started reconnecting again. But it still didn't ever get there. |

 salahx join:2001-12-03 Saint Louis, MO | reply to Justakiwi Well its under /usr/libexec under Gentoo. Maybe under Ubuntu its somewhere else...
You also need to make sure Empathy isn't started before you run those commands, then start Empathy afterwards. |

 | OK, it's an ICQ issue. I just registered for a Jabber account and successfully logged in with Empathy, using that account. So Empathy is working but for some reason doesn't like ICQ. |
