 | Computer is getting IP address, but not router My activation date was 1/5. Setup my computer to obtain an IP address automatically and it works. Tried the same with my router (Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato firmware configured for DHCP) but it can never get an IP. Left it trying for 5-10 minutes and still no go. Tried power cycling DSL modem (SpeedStream 4100) and router, but still doesn't work.
Computer direct to DSL modem gets an IP right away and has no problems (the speed is great BTW! Have 3Mbps plan, getting 2.6 Mbps). So it sounds like my router issue, not a DSLExtreme issue, but have you encountered this or similar issue before? Any ideas on troubleshooting?
Thanks for any help! |

 | i'd guess that the router and modem both want to use the same local ip. it's probably easiest to change the router... |
|
 | Modem is 192.168.0.1 and router is configured as 192.168.1.1 so there shouldn't be any conflict. |

 | reply to wonger33 you might just run the modem in bridge mode and let the router sign on to the internet... |

While these instructions are for the 5100, they are exactly the same for the 4100 modems.

 | My speedstream modem is already in bridge mode. I switched from AT&T DSL so I made sure to change the mode from "PPPoE on the computer" to "Bridge mode".
I don't understand why my computer configured for DHCP (obtain an IP address automatically) can get a WAN IP address, but my router also configured for DHCP can't (it has worked before when I was previously a DSLExtreme customer).
I even went to specify 3 Usable Ip Addresses in my DSLExtreme account. Does this matter? Is there some MAC address checking/filtering going on anywhere? Should I set the MAC address on my router to match my computer's MAC? |

dslx_nick join:2011-12-24 Chatsworth, CA kudos:11 | Should not need to clone your computer's MAC address (shouldn't be any MAC address filtering going on here). Were you using that same Tomato firmware back when you were originally using DSL Extreme?
Send me your account info and I'll get a tech on this. |

 | dslx_nick: Good point... no, I wasn't using the Tomato firmware back when I was originally using DSL Extreme. But I just tried the DD-WRT firmware as well and can't get an IP with that either.
I sent you my account info via email through this forum. (Wasn't sure if I should use instant message or email, but chose email option. Let me know otherwise.) Appreciate your help. |

 | reply to dslx_nick Just to get confirmation, according to this link, »www.dslextreme.com/support/kb/li···er-setup, the "host name" should be dslextreme.com and "domain name" blank. This is an old page, but that is what I've done. Is this correct? Does it still matter?
(This page says to specify a static IP, but I did not do that. I specify DHCP for WAN setup. I just followed this page for the "host name" and "domain name" settings.) |

dslx_nick join:2011-12-24 Chatsworth, CA kudos:11 | You're quite right, your connection type is set for DHCP (not static).
Host Name is optional; we don't require it. It SHOULDN'T cause an issue. I'll have a tech contact you shortly, but go ahead and try taking out the Host Name in the meantime. |

 | I don't know what happened, but I hooked up my router to do more troubleshooting this evening and things just started working. I did, however, increase the IP addresses on my account from 3 to 5 because I got my hands on some other routers to test/troubleshoot with. Could that be it?
But prior to today, I've only connected 2 devices to the modem: a laptop and a router (and never at the same time), so 3 should have been enough. Anyway, it's working now, but would still like to try and narrow down why I had so much trouble.
Also, the DSL Extreme "Manage your IP Addresses" page always says "We couldn't find any devices using your current IP Address(es)". Is this normal? I would expect at least one device listed here. |
|
dslx_nick join:2011-12-24 Chatsworth, CA kudos:11 | Increasing the number of IPs shouldn't have made any difference, but if you want to do further testing to narrow down what was the cause of your router's difficulty, the first thing I would suggest is setting the IP number back down to 3, powercycle your equipment, and then see if you're having trouble once more.
Not sure about why the "Manage your IP Addresses" page isn't showing anything there; I'll have a tech investigate and get back to you on that. |
