ASUS RT-N16 router antenna upgrade and mismatched antennas

I've got as ASUS RT-N16 router ordered and on the way and I'm researching antenna upgrades.

This particular router has three antennas.

Do I need to replace all three antennas with identical upgrade antennas?

Can I replace just one antenna and get any benefit?

How about keeping one stock antenna and swapping in one 7dBi antenna and one 9dBi antenna?

I've seen claims that mixed antennas sometimes results in better coverage.

Thoughts?

My thoughts are this:

First, If you are going to replace the antennas, use three identical replacements. If mis-matched antennas performed better, it would ship that way.

Second, if the stock antennas are not good enough, you are trying to cover too large an area. You should be looking into adding additional access points, not adding bigger antennas.
