LED street lamps

At first I thought the covers fell off the lights but then I noticed the whole street was like that, happen to look up and you can see the two row of LED's it's like a half figure eight pattern.

surprising it was brighter then the HPS lights they replaced and a better CRI.

Has anyone else town's switched to this lighting for streets?

I'd have to bring my 200 mm lens to get a close up of the fixture.

We got them here this fall. I like them, especially when the streets are wet.

yeah hopefully they don't absorb the light as much

Yeah central NJ getting them as well. The lighting does seem better. Cost effective I bet too.

I wish I knew which lamp it was curious to see how much power it uses.

Here most traffic lights have been upgraded to LED a long time ago but I have yet to see any LED street lights. I would also be very surprised if they started changing out HPS for LED, considering the city council's apparent inability to plan ahead.

yeah most everywhere the traffic lights are LED However speaking of that more and more I notice more with segments that don't work.. Curious what the life time they give for them.

Some streets here have them, but I don't know whether it is the city or the utility company that is responsible for the change. The first time I noticed them it was because at night a stretch of street lights was dark and the street lights in the next two blocks were unusually bright. When I had a closer look at the bright lights they turned out to be LED lights. Since then they have turned up on other streets as well.

How much light do they reflect back at the night sky?

It is better or worse than high-pressure sodium?

these were commonplace when i was a young child, there was something about the warm fuzzy feeling of incandescent street lamps passing by while napping in the back seat of this with a blanket as my parents drove around with the mellow gold oldies playing in the background.

Very little (at least the design used here). It is a flat rectangular light fixture with LEDs pointing downwards.

That is a really tough question. Why did you pick those as a comparison ? I'm one of those people that likes the yellow color of sodium lamps but I do know that there are people who hate it. I would guess preference for one or the other will be based on the light color more then on the technology used to produce the light.

The LED streetlights produce white light similar to high-pressure mercury vapor bulbs.

They recently installed them near our airport. They do not have nearly the light output as they replaced 20 sodium vapor lights with 80 LED lights on the main road.

I am assuming the overall power usage is lower. At least I hope it is...

If they weren't there beforehand, it's gonna take a while to recover the construction costs for those additional 60 street light poles also. Especially if they couldn't intercept existing AC cables and had to trench new supply circuits in.

Be interesting to see the 'real' numbers and justification for that project.

Yellow = Low-pressure sodium
Pink = High-pressure sodium

High-pressure sodium is the major culprit.

I'd be very happy if the light of the new fixtures were like the old mercury lights. They threw much less light up at the sky.

Seen some on Parker St in Springfield, MA around the area that my church is located. I'm not sure when they were installed but they're north of the area that got hit by the tornado. They also might have been put in after the Halloween weekend snowstorm that destroyed the electrical grid and left millions in the dark.

so far i've changed over 6 or 7 local gas stations to LED area lighting, and a high end hotel. LSI is the main retrofit light we use for gas stations----DAMN they're bright!! i'll check what the wattage is--i forgot

Good picture! An interesting design, it makes people realize how much optical design goes into LED applications.

They're testing them here. About 60 of them, iirc. The problem is the old lights were something like $125 but these cost $650 (I may not have the exact numbers). The LED ones last much longer, of course, and use less power but the question is how well they hold up outdoors for years on end.

People here were interviewed on the news and said they really noticed the difference and very much prefer the LED lights.
