Re: [Rant] HID Headlights/Foglights

If you pro-HID-guys can't drive at night with stock lights - don't drive at night.

Quite frankly most of the night driving happens in your brain, and if you have trouble straining your brains due to the night time visual information being tougher to interpret - just don't drive.

So I assume you must have driven a car with HID lights on a country road with no moon out.... right?

I've driven lots of country, and rural roads at night (no moonlight) with just Xenons in my truck. I've never had a problem seeing.

Right. And I hate remote locks, powered windows, self-parking wipers, and starter motors.

(Not really. My aged father used to say the same as you. How old are you?)

I have driven an HID converted car,
it truly seems that there is a lot of light in front of you.
It does bring more confidence. Theres a great video explaining whats wrong with HID conversions, I'm too lazy to reference.
All regular points - beam spread/height, color and intensity (including reflector modification) are all very valid.

I drive fairly well through dark/rain/fog because I mostly drive on roads I know well, and I have a good road memory. I just keep my distance and know when the turns are coming up.

I don't believe extra bright / side sweeping / fancy lights are needed to drive safe. And the inconvenience and safety hazard caused to fellow drivers outweighs the benefits.

To add to this, I find people who use the HID's tend to over drive their headlights. "I see better, so I can go faster".

Yea, except when you need to stop fast. Then, you can watch that object that's so brightly lit, collide with your vehicle!

HID's brights are even brighter than that

though whats annoying is when someone's headlights are right on level with your back window

Not annoying at all. I’ve had people drive behind me many times with their high beams on before, or folks with HIDs and it doesn’t bother me one bit. Autochromatic rearview mirrors are great!

It really baffles me that such a large population apparently thinks that turning on headlights is really a two step operation: "First I turn on this switch which turns on my headlights. Then I push this switch, which turns on my headlights."

I don't think I've owned a vehicle in the last decade that had headlights that had to be turned on manually. Isn't it standard now to have headlights that turn on automatically when it gets dark?

I’ve owned two cars in my life. A 1998 Mercury Mountaineer and my current 2005 Aviator. Both had/have auto lights. I occasionally would manually turn on the lights with the Mountaineer, but I bought the Lincoln in 2008 and haven’t touched the headlight controls once sit I got it.

So don’t drive at all in mid-December when it starts to get dark at 4:30 and is almost pitch black by 5:30? Yeah okay…

I'm weird and like controlling them manually. Usually the headlights need to come on a lot sooner than the sensor thinks, especially in the winter time when the sun is never too high in the sky and creating significant glare.

I also do like the fog lights, they illuminate MUCH more of the sides of roads and such, especially when in the back woods where you want to be watching for animals.

This is what high beams are for. Turn the high beams on when you're not around traffic.

If it fails, you just do it manually. No biggie.

hmmmm perhaps more people should do it manually then.... i see TONS of vehicles around here driving with no tail lights in complete darkness.

Yea, that's because the boy wonders that designed them, made vehicles with the dash lights on always. People think all their lights are on.

Not discounting people are stupid as well...

Not quite as bad but I kinda hate drivers driving with the parking lights on thinking they are for when it's not too dark.

I've seen a person drive on the highway at like 7 Pm with just parking lights on.. I almost went into the lane that they were in until I caught a glance of the parking light

Vehicles that come equipped with HID are fine, as are the "legit" conversions that people pay $1000s for. My car was installed with HID and auto-levelers at the factory. I know for a fact that they don't glare, as my car is a fairly popular model in SoCal (I'v seen a ton of them at night).

The real trouble comes when you have the conversion kits from eBay - these are very annoying.

I just bought a new Honda. My previous car I had for 13.5 years and it had fog lights that I rarely used (only in one area of this island where at dusk the fog is very dense). My new car does not have fog lights. It has daytime running lights and that is a real problem! Not during the daytime but as dusk approaches. During the day the dash board lights are extremely bright blue. As dusk approaches the dashboard is still very bright and readable. My previous car did not have daytime running lights so the dashboard only lit up when I turned on the lights because it was getting dark.

In the new Honda, I see the dashboard lit up and think the night time lights are on but they are not. The daytime running lights are not nearly as bright as the night time lights. I have to MANUALLY switch on the night time lights. They do NOT come on automatically nor do they switch from daytime running lights to regular night time lights. I have to do that myself. Or if I get in the car at night and start the engine NO lights come on until I turn them on.

What is standard these days is daytime running lights. Those get you a nice discount on your auto insurance too. They should automatically switch from daytime to nighttime at dusk and this 2012 Honda does not. In fact, during the day, the dashboard shows a bright blue icon for the running lights being on automatically...cannot be turned off. When dusk comes, I have had to learn that that icon is for the daytime running lights and not the nighttime lights. So, I turn on the nighttime lights and there is a SECOND icon that is fainter and on the other side of the dashboard that indicates the nighttime lights are on. The daytime running lights icon remains on also. It's quite confusing and, several times, I have driven through parking lots and down the highway where there are lots of lights with only the daytime lights on thinking my night time lights were on. I solved the problem by setting the dashboard to be a DIMMER blue at night from the bright blue during the day and so when I don't see the dimmer blue and it is dark/almost dark I know to turn on the nighttime lights.
