Re: Is MGM releasing Wizard Of Oz any time soon in widescreen?

I guess maybe they should have made the pillars emerald instead of black?

("Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain those bars on the sides.")

Better yet! ...emerald "curtains"!

Letterbox means you are getting what you missed from Pan&Scan.

While not related to the dimensions of the Wizard of Oz, didnt Philips or someone try and market a TV that was at the dimensions of filmed movies rather than the 16:9 of HDTV?

I think it was Panasonic... ? It was the uber widescreen unit (2.43, 2.45?), and looked pretty neat. A day late, and a dollar short though.

Of course, 16:9 would still have the black at each end of the pic, but full vertical.

edit - you're right, it was Philips, a 21:9 - »www.trustedreviews.com/Philips-C···V_review )

Imagine the stretch-o-vision on that thing when some moron watches 4:3 content on it and doesn't like the fact that nearly half his screen has black bars on the sides.

lol, even in panoramic stretch its going to look bad.
at least on my older set, i can force 4:3 on those stupid HD channels that stretch the content panoramically, it looks better even though the center is a bit "squeezed" as a result of the panoramic stretch, but on the channels that just plain stretch content, it looks like the normal 4:3 it was intended to be.
lately though, the new norm now with content is to zoom 4:3 to 16:9 and theres obviously no way out of that.

Really the only company that could effectively produce home versions with any reasonable quality at all resolutions would be someone like Pixar, Dreamworks, etc.

After all computing power is getting to the point they could render CinemaScope and 1080p frames side by side.

Live action cant do this yet since id imagine you need different lenses and image sensors for both... in CG Animation the cameras are all virtual.
