Game minimizes when trying to access second monitor

I have a dual monitor setup. I run my game as full screen (currently playing SWTOR). When I try to access programs on my second monitor, the game on my main screen minimizes, like I have Alt-Tabbed out of the game. This happens in every game I play that allows the mouse to leave the perimeter of the game window.

My wife's game rig does not behave this way. She can fully access her second monitor with no problems and her game continues to run fine. She can move the mouse between monitors and access programs on the second monitor without issue, then move the mouse back to her game (also SWTOR) and keep right on playing. Her game never minimizes.

Any ideas on what I can change to make my computer behave like hers? It is so annoying that I cannot move my mouse over to the second monitor, either purposefully, or on accident, and not have my game 'Alt-tab' out.

My video card and monitor setup:
Video card 1: eVGA GTX570 (SLI mode)
Video card 2: eVGA GTX570 (SLI mode)
Monitor 1: 28" Hanns G HZ281HPB LCD
Monitor 2: 28" Hanns G HG281DPB LCD

Her video card and monitor setup:
Video: EVGA GTX580 03G-P3-1584-AR GeForce 3072MB GDDR5 PCB PCI-Express 2.0 Graphics Card
Monitor 1: 24" Viewsonic VA2431
Monitor 2: 24" Viewsonic VA2431

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

She probably has the game set on "window full screen", therefore, it does not minimize when accessing her other monitor.

I will look. This may also explain why she cannot enable 'vertical sync' in her SWTOR video options.

Also, if she is running in 'window full screen', does that degrade game performance? I've heard that running in 'windowed' mode over non-windowed can severely degrade frame rates. Is that correct?

Thank you again for your help.

Run in windowed mode. I do this so I can alt tab with the GPU going through the lag of minimizing and changing resolutions.

just do windowed mode, and use shiftwindow

»grismar.net/shiftwindow/

it's what streamers use, and i use for ease of use

Ok, thanks everyone. That was it. My wife was running in 'Full Screen (windowed)'. This is also the reason why she could not select 'vertical sync'.

I set my game rig to 'Full Screen (windowed)' and did not notice a performance hit. I will run with this for a while and see if there are any long term effects, but I do not anticipate any. I really like that I cam move my mouse over to my second monitor and manipulate applications now without alt-tabbing out of the game.

Thanks again to everyone for their responses.

I've found that games can drop 1-4fps (on average) when running in Full Screen (windowed).

I've been running that kind of mode since early 2000s whenever available. I dislike long alt-tab times, esp. with two monitors.

1-4 fps is not bad at all. A very nice trade off to keep from getting kicked out to desktop while gaming, for sure.

I am going to start taking advantage of this mode in future games as well, since I now know about it, and understand it.

Every game can be played in Full Screen mode? Because when I play LoL and I have to scroll on the itembuild, I need to alt+tab the game.

LoL is easier to keep in full-screen mode because moving the mouse to the edge of the map is used for scrolling.

Oh, you're right:)) Silly me. But somehow I can scroll in the browser without minimizing the game?

Possibly maybe an alt-tab glitch, like maybe middle-mouse clicking and then alt-tabbing without letting up on the MMB?

And then how I can use the scroll? I can't try now the dual monitor mounting, because my LCD is in the college.

I don't know, you asked how it was possible, so I was speculating. If you are like me, you type at over 100 wpm and use keyboard shortcuts all the time, oftentimes you work faster than the operating system can process your actions, and you run into all sorts of glitches.

I'm an usual computer user so I can't beat the processor in my laptop and the chance to run in these glitches is low.

I just want to know how you get away with having the 28's while she gets the puny little 24's?

Without looking at the specs, I would almost always prefer a 24" Viewsonic to a 28" Hanns-G (no name brand!)

I have more desk space, otherwise she too would have dual 28s.
