[ID?] Which hawk?

I think it's an immature red-tailed hawk, but I'm not sure. Can I get a second opinion?

Thanks.

How big is is? I thought it was an osprey, but after looking at my bird book it doesn't have enough white on its head. Red-tailed hawks are about 18-25 inches

99% it's not an osprey. They can be found around here, but the markings were wrong and it was smaller than those that I've seen. I didn't get close enough to measure (or salt his tail), but I'd size it between a crow and a buzzard. Closer to the latter.

Definitely not an osprey. See my photo of an osprey here.

The wing markings are those of a red-tail, and juveniles don't yet have the red tail, but do have speckled chests. My vote for juvenile red-tail.

OT, but my wife gave me "Birds of Florida" field guide by Stan Tekiela. It's a wonderful book, sturdy construction, small enough to fit in a camera bag, and is nicely laid out.

I think you're right about it being a young red-tail, and thanks for taking a look.

I stay as far from Florida as I can most days. Petersen's Field Guide To Western Birds has been my main reference, but it stays at home in my office. I'll take a look at Tekiela's work as well.
