 | [DIRECTV] Satellite Location... Here's the deal, I've got a friend who's got DirecTv and has a receiver he's not using. I live in an apartment that faces south. Could I get a dish, put it on a tripod on my porch (since I live on the 2nd floor) and have my friend activate the service on his un-used receiver to be used at my place? I know he doesn't have phone service, just a cell phone and so do I. Let me know if this is possible. Thanks all. |

order D* service and have the service installed at your apartment. |

One account -One billing location.
Did I not understand? that is what you are trying to do? |

 | reply to jhough19 Yeah, basically he'll activate it at his place, then I'll bring it over to my place and hook it up to the dish sitting on my porch. |

 | reply to jhough19 Now I hope everyone knows that I wouldn't be asking this or even be considering this if I had known this was illegal, but now that I know I won't do it. All well. Thanks all. |

1 edit | reply to jhough19 Interesting subject. I know from previous posts by a cable installer how unauthorized taps into a cable system can create bad service for many other customers, so I get the comparison to that. As I understand, satellite TV no longer requires a hardwired telephone connection for service. Am i wrong on this? If the service is being paid for, in full, from the address of the original account creator, then DirecTV is being compensated. If the extra receiver is used in the same spot beam local Designated Marketing Area (DMA) as the original location, but moved from the original location, can a satellite TV company determine this by monitoring the receiver? If I owned a parcel of land 10 miles wide East - West and 10 miles wide North-South, can I put one receiver and antenna in the Northwest corner and another receiver and antenna in the South east corner using the same account? The parcel is in a single DMA and ZipCode area. I do not think the receiver boxes have a GPS type tracker. DirecTV offers a mobile service for RV and boat users. Those receivers can move all over the USA. If I owned multiple vacation homes across the USA, each with DirecTV service, could I not pay the bills from one billing address? I would guess the OP could not ever call DirecTV to complain about service, nor could his friend ever ask DirecTV about a service issue at the OPs location. But that would just be a situation the OP would have to live with.
I know the local cable company does unscheduled random investigations to find unauthorized taps and extra connections. In the past they have taken out big ads announcing they are doing this or have recently done it. They even have had several specially marked trucks go to MDUs (Multiple Dwelling Units) or subdivisions at the same time to conduct the investigation and disconnect any illegal connections. I wonder if the DirecTV installers, servicing a particular MDU, pay attention to a new antenna that they did not install. Do they just assume it was a self install? If the antennas markings are masked over, it would just be a grey colored antenna. It could be DishNetwork or DirecTV or something else. |

| reply to jhough19 It's an easy answer... It's "illegal" because it violates the TOS with DirecTV. Two separate full-time locations on one account.
Does it still happen? All the time... Can they track it? Without a phone on broadband connection to the receiver... Not really... If it is found out, will the fraud department cancel the account? Most Definitely!
People have cabins and campsites that they maintain here and will take receivers from their home account and hook up when they are at the cabins... I have not seen any issues with this as they are a) paying for the account and b) are not maintaining the service at both locations all the time. They are only in place or the other. (We've even had to do service calls and dish re-align's on these campsites)
What you are talking is you only paying $6 a month for service off your friends account in a separate residence... -- Words of advice for today... "Be Happy, Drink Coffee, Drive Safe!" |
