regarding the DPC3825

I have been reading mixed reviews on this Modem Router combo and was wondering if the horror stories are true and if you should connect your own router in bridge mode

I always think you should, based on single point of failure, unless you are unskilled enough to not be able to manage your own router.

Picking good solid stable hardware that you can manage is what I feel is best.

I totally plan on eventually doing this , but the trouble is finding one that be flashed with DDWRT and can handle the 100mbit or greater throughput

Re: regarding the DPC3825

Have an older (around 1GHz) and 512MB RAM desktop computer kicking around?

Add a couple Gigabit Network cards, I had good success with the GA311 cards,

And you have a router that will easily run DD-WRT with all the features enabled.

Yes, you should use your own router- the built in ones aren't better than the $20 crap you find on special. Open too many connections and they'll lockup/reboot/etc.

If you want, look for a Netgear WNDR 3800 - it's a follow-on to the 3700, but Netgear calls it an "Open Router" and there's DDWRT/Tomato/OpenWRT firmware for it. It's available for around $100 or so.

This modem router combo came with my BB50 and while I'm happy to have only one box to deal with the wireless speeds experienced by my PS3 are sub par compared to what they were when I had Extreme and my own DLinkDIR 628 router. Gave it away so would need to pick something up although not sure what at say Memory Express or simply plug a network cable into the PS3.

got hooked up for Shaw 250 and so far I am getting lackluster performance with this Cisco unit when I want to download via Bittorrent. The torrent gets plenty of peers everyone else can seed and download but me. Port Fowarded and even tried dmz

The torrents speed will burst to a number like 600KB/s then just drop to zero and not move at all

I really haven't had too many issues. I was lucky enough that when I originally ordered BB50, I mentioned to the CSR that I wanted to use my own router. I'm guessing she paid attention because it was in bridge mode out of the box.

I'm using an ASUS RT-N16 router with it. Flashed it with TomatoUSB (can also be flashed with DD-WRT from what I understand). The two work well together.

The connection is generally rock solid. I had some issues around Christmas where the connection was resetting. I'm not sure what caused it. It seems to have gone away. I know I have signal issues in my apartment because the tech had to put on a booster, so I'll blame it on that.

Most of the time I go weeks without ever loosing the connection so its really stable from my experience.

The asus router is awesome for handling the traffic. It also has 2.4ghz wiresless n, and hardwired gigabit ethernet ports. I'm a big fan of routers than can run tomato, so this was an excellent replacement for my linksys wrt54gl.

You won't be able to stream through your home network because the modem/router combo is pretty sub-standard. There's an issue where it won't let the wired and wireless connections communicate.

Put it in bridged mode and use your own router. That solved all of my problems.

Also, Shaw throttles torrents. Always has and always will. You'll never get stellar speeds.

Good luck getting streaming to work. You can't have wireless devices on your homegroup with the Shaw modem/router. You'll need to put it into bridge mode and use your own router. It's pretty worthless.

They only throttle if you're on an overloaded node. I've never had an issue with torrents.

So far streaming to my WDTV via wired has been flawless, have not tried streaming via wireless yet.

I am more concerned with my Bittorrent speeds. When I was using my 1gbit server I had over seas, torrents would fly , but speeds with shaw they are subpar even though speed tests show me as 145/10

My torrents wont even go above 200KB/s for upload and my standing on a private tracker is taking a hit

So you would recommend this Asus router? I have BB50 with Cisco modem router combo and PS3 wireless speeds are very poor compared to my old DLINK DIR router with Extreme. Believe my combo modem is already in bridge mode how do I check it? And cannot establish a home group under Windows 7.

How to check, plug your computer directly into it,

Do you get a 192.168.0.x address? Or a public Shaw address,

Does it broadcast a WiFi SSID? If yes, it is not in bridge mode.

kevinds, not sure I follow - there is no other option but to be connected directly to the router / modem combo. Yes, I do get internal IP as 192.168.0.x while external is something else. Yes, my wireless devices pick up the SSID. So you're telling me I'm not in bridge mode? When I got set up with BB50 I asked specifically to set this Cisco unit in bridge mode and was assured that it was in bridge mode.

So how do I set this combo unit in a bridge mode? Once done I assume I'd need to buy another router and use Cisco as a modem only? Can you recommend a specific router? Need to get decent speeds on PS3 plus hoping to establish Windows 7 HomeGroup as I really would love to share the printer hooked up to my desktop.

Thanks

When I got BB50 setup Cisco unit was already in bridge mode since wireless router function didn't work. I had it enabled. Just did a chat session and got the bridge mode enabled again as wireless is no more and internal IP equals external IP. Now need to make a trip to Memory Express and decide between the Netgear routers I'm looking at or one from Asus. Unless you guys can suggest one I'll go with store's advice. Vertical one would work better on my desk. Asus RT N56U, Netgear WNDR4500, WNDR3700, WNR3500L. Thank you for your help and patience in dealing with network noob.

I Plan on neuturing the bug before it expands into a full blown Pandemic, Im picking up a Netgear 3500L and am going t flash it with DDWRT to use in conjunction with Shaws pos cisco unit.

Why bother giving customers these units if they are so flakey?
