| [Scam] Windows Event Viewer Scam These scammers cold call you stating, "We were notified by Microsoft that your computer is reporting a lot of errors and is infected with malicious software and we are going to help you make some repairs."
They will try to get you to open your system's Event Viewer to witness for yourself the number of Warnings and Errors logged by your system. This is done in an attempt to establish their credibility and gain your trust.
Next they will attempt to get you to type a URL into your computer's RUN box and navigate to their web page. They will attempt to have you give them remote access to your computer. Once you have given them remote access to your computer, they will tell you that they need your Credit Card to cover charges for their services.
Refusing to provide a credit card or purchase their (HA!) service is of little comfort at this point as they will have already installed keystroke monitoring and backdoor trojans onto your computer system via the remote access connection.
If you receive a call such as this; Do not follow their instructions.
Simply disconnect the call.
****Microsoft Support will NEVER cold call you or provide your information to a 3rd Party without your explicit authorization.****
****Never allow anyone remote access to your computer. If your computer needs repair, take it to a repair shop or contact a reputable company for onsite repair services.****

| Just received a second call tonight from the same scammers! This time the caller had a heavy Eastern European accent. Apparently, these idiots are on the prowl once again.
Beware folks.

| I had one of these calls too. The caller ID was 10000000000. I've since added this to my asterisk blacklist.
I did play with them though. I said I didn't have an event viewer; said all I had was Linux. They hung up. |

| reply to stinger Yup I got hit by them last night... I had to laugh my ass off.
I was not in a good mood that day so the conversation went something like this...
Lady on Phone: "Yes sir this is the windows service center I'm calling about your computer" Me: "No you're a crook trying to scam people out of money" Lady on Phone: "No sir I don't think you understand I'm from the windows service center" Me: "No you're an ignorant scammer who should be lined up and shot for trying to rip people off of money you moronic idiot!" |
