wattrt join:2002-08-12 Birmingham, AL | [HSI] Internet MAX tier? What should my speeds be? For the longest time, I thought my purchased speeds were for 20/2 (or it might have been 18/2). It's been 2+ years since I got the service. My bill calls it "Internet MAX Upgrade". I was looking to get a SlingBox HD and was verifying my upload speeds. Turns out I'm operating at 20/3.
I went to Charter's site and noticed that this tier doesn't exist. There's a 15/3 and a 30/4. Of course, there's the 100/5. I can't decipher if I'm in some limbo land that never got upgraded or if I am not getting what I pay for.
I only have internet through Charter, so my 20/3 connection is $80/mo. Is that normal for those speeds? Or should I have been upgraded when their tiers were upgraded?
Thanks! |

it's what i did during the speed changes |

 | reply to wattrt If you only have internet through Charter, they soak you an extra $10 for that, plus modem lease is $7 if you don't own your own, and if you have Charters network junk, that's another $9, or there abouts.
The plan it sounds like you have is the same as me, 15/3 which for me is something like $49, with my own modem, no Charter network crap and I do have expanded basic cable tv.
From what your description sounds like, it sounds like you are being raped by Charter!!
All areas are slightly different, so my services and pricing may not be exactly what it could be for you.

Internet Service $54.99 Internet MAX Upgrade $25.00
When does Charter not rape customers? My wife and I hate them, but they're the only good ISP option for our area.
UPDATE I just called and got an extremely nice rep (that's a first). She easily migrated me to the PLUS (30/4) tier. It's going to save me about $23/mo now. Comes to $57 now. The 100/5 tier was $30 more (or $7 more than I *was* paying). Ugh! |

Been a very good ISP for me, for the better part of 13 years now.
The few times I've ever called Charter, the reps were all very nice also.
What the heck was that internet MAX upgrade of $25 supposed to be for? Obviously looks like something you more or less didn't even know about? Now, that th being raped part! -- The Firefox alternative. »www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/ |

What the heck was that internet MAX upgrade of $25 supposed to be for? Obviously looks like something you more or less didn't even know about? Now, that th being raped part! I've had some form of Charter service at any time for the past 20 years. When I got DirecTV, I dropped Charter as a cable TV service provider.
The Internet MAX was a tier they offerred 2+ years ago when I was initially set up. It was the added speed upgrade that was converted to PLUS later on.
The being raped part is Charter changing their plans (which are faster & cheaper) without informing the customer. They're happy to continue to take my $80/mo for an out-dated service that really only costs $57. If I hadn't learned of this, then I would continue to be over-charged. How many customers are being over-charged for old plans and not knowing it?
As for Charter's service, obviously you've never been screwed over by them and I envy you. I've never once met someone who has had good things to say about them. But you work with what is available.
That's not to say, they provide horrible service all the time. It has been better lately. I have had steady fast internet service for the past few years. But when I've had TV with them and my wife also had TV/internet with them before we were married, nothing but terrible customer service missed appointments, bad picture, set-top boxes failing, loss of service, over-charges, refunds not processed until multiple calls placed, etc.

Thanks. I bought a Motorola Surfboard DOCSIS 3.0 modem back in 2009 to be somewhat future-ready. I was actually getting upload speeds in the 44.5 Mbps range this morning. |

 | If your modem is a Motorola SB6120 I recommend you post over at Charter Direct forum to have the latest firmware pushed out to your modem. |

 | reply to wattrt Why did you call and change it? You were seeing the base business package speeds and paying the price of the base business internet package.
If your budget allowed you to pay for it all these months I would have kept that and download and uploaded to my heart contents and when Charter told you naughty naughty for going over cap you could have played dumb and said look at my bill statement and price that is a business plan of speed and price no cap.
But your damage is done now hopefully you do not go over the cap. |

You can use the 30 Meg tier just fine on a docsis 2.0 modem. We do. That's not the issue. I just don't expect 30 meg speeds. Most of the time we get about 22-27 Mbps on the PC connected to the router and around 20 Mbps on the PCs using wi-fi. |

 | reply to Kayrac I would have played the "dumb" card because every time I try to go from Res. to Bus. they want to charge me the $99.00 set up charge. I always explain to them that the account is on equipment is good can't you just change it over.
Every time they are no no no you pay that for world class service and a special tech to come out and install and special "business" modem and router at your home so you get the best performance and no rental fees for equipment since we charge you 99.00 up front. (ah a line is a line service is hot and my modem is currently on plus 30 so i think it can handle the business 20 with no problem) lol
That is why if I was the OP I would have just keep my mouth shut and said look at speed and price that is business base package and not had a cap but now if they go over too much they are going to have to pay the 99 hook up fee.
Just a slick way I thought the OP could get rid of their cap and not have to pay the 99 install fee. |
