damonlabPremium join:2001-05-02 Detroit, MI | Restoring an Arcserve 11.1 backup of Exchange 2003 I am looking to restore the edb and stm files from an Exchange 2003 backup that was made seven years ago using Arcserve 11.1. I have separate software that can pull my needed data from the edb and stm files.
I still have a copy of Arcserv 11.1. The software reads my SDLT tape and the data is on the tape. From what I have read, it seems that I need to do the restore to a recovery storage group on the original server. The problem is that the Exchange server and the Active Directory server have been upgraded since that time. I do not have an 'original' server to restore to. As far as the old server goes, I only know the server name and do not know patch level, organization name, administrative group name, storage group name, database store name, or the legacyexchangedn value. I do not have a backup of the old active directory either. I do not have a current maintenance contract with CA and even if I did, their end of support for Arcserve 11.1 was on 1/1/2010. When I was told by CA that the product had ended support, I asked "What is the purpose of using your backup software if I can't do a restore of an old backup?" They did not have a response to that.
Is there any way for me to get the edb and stm files from this backup tape? |

 | I'd open a case with Microsoft PSS and see if they can help you. CA support blows (Symantec/BackupExec is little better), but PSS is pretty vested in getting the caller to a solution. Just make SURE you clearly define the goal of the case with them: "Recover X Mailbox from Arcserve backup" (or whatever it is). |

Apparently "Fix My Server" wasn't going to fly with management. -- I love the Green Bay Packers. /facepalm |

Apparently "Fix My Server" wasn't going to fly with management. Ever since they off-shored PSS they have been a huge PITA about scope. I've had several issues where they documented the scope differently from what I'd (repeatedly) stated and then tried to wiggle out of the call before the problem was really fixed.
This never happened when PSS was in North America. |

We have used them a bunch to recover tapes for legal proceedings. They do great work and have a fast turn around. We have never had a tape or backup solution that they have not been able to recover and land to a hard disk. We have even had some DDS-1 tapes recovered by them.
Just be aware that they do great work but are pricey, but like everything else in life you get what you pay for. |
