cbara join:2010-07-06 Beverly Hills, CA | Have triple play, want to cut tv My bill is around $180 a month now for FIOS internet/tv/phone. Id like to cut tv, and maybe get netflix and or hulu to stream.
Has anyone done this, or currently have this setup? The bill is getting too expensive and the tv is not used as much as we are paying for. Thanks. |

| Lots of people are doing this , there are tons of headlines on tech sites and all of them generally start with "Cutting the cord"
Just keep in mind Verizon likes to charge you more for the same services if you cut one out. So while it may be $180 for internet/tv/phone , if you drop the TV you'll be entering a new contract with them and you'll end up paying more per month for the same internet/voice.
Just call them up and say that you've seen some great offers from another service provider in your mail and that your considering changing service. See if perhaps they can cut you a new deal (although you'll probably have to do another 2 year contract) or at least a discounted rate of some kind with only Internet/Voice.
Once you start throwing around interest in another provider , they will want to keep you happy ..and a Verizon customer if they can help it. |

| I too was thinking of doing something similar. When I checked their service listings it appeared to me that they are charging $95/m for internet only, which is silly considering you can get a base triple play package for just a few dollars more.
Does anyone get just internet or internet/phone, and if they dont mind sharing (even ballpark) what they pay I'd be interested in knowing more. |

kes601 join:2007-04-14 Virginia Beach, VA | reply to cbara Keep in mind if you are on a bundle contract you have to pay ETF if you cancel any service. This didn't used to be the case, but is now. In my case it would be $120. |

 | reply to cbara My first thought was my original contract prohibited downloading of movies, however, that does not seem to be in the current terms and conditions of use (unless I missed it).
Might I ask if one were to get a service such as netflix or hulu on internet, what is the mechanism to get the picture to the TV without adding another computer in the TV location?

Bruce AppleTV (netflix and iTunes), Roku (netflix, hulu plus, amazon), Internet-connected Blu-Ray Player (varies depending on player) would be 3 examples. |

Thanks. you can log into verizon.com/fios go under MYverizon or MYaccount and log in then click on MY ACCOUNT overview , on the right is a "update" services button and just play around. eventually there's a screen where it now (for the first time for me anyways) it let's you click on NO phone or NO TV and mix and match. this will give you a price idea . keep in mind that the only still INSISTS on a new 2 year commitment.
but then you can call in having a better idea, it won't hurt torecord on your side what they say. as they continue to lie about everything and promise what they can not deliver.
for example just yesterday I called in trying to get BACK my SD set top boxes I foolishly turned in last yeasr thinking I would try the HD for 3 months. when I went back they "were no longer giving them out".
now that I read they are I called in and was told ONLY for NEW customers. WTF is wrong with this company. |

drknappPremium join:2003-11-13 Redlands, CA | reply to cbara I just made the same move. Dropped all but the 15/5 internet and went from $173 a month to $65 a month. Lots of OTA stations in my area which helped make the decision easier. Bought a TIVO (lots of options out there) in order to have the guide service and a DVR. Pretty happy so far. |

1 edit | If you want to get the best deal, ask cable company to install the Internet or whatever else you want. Cable companies do not ask for contract, most also offer one-month money back guarantee just like Verizon. Once cable Internet is working fine, call Verizon to cancel everything. Within a week of cancelling, you will receive a promotional code in paper mail that will be the best deal you have ever seen. Something like $79.99 for triple play with one or two year(s) price guarantee. Just sign up by using the promotional code provided via the net, you will have your Verizon Internet restored in about a week with new router that normally has the latest revision. If you can live without Internet or connect to open wi-fi for two weeks (one week waiting for the promotional code and another week of waiting for FiOS installation), you do not even have to bother cable company. |

| reply to cbara Interesting topic, we have been NJ Bell/ VZ customers for several years now. We signed up for VZ DSL back in 2000 and ran that up until getting about Fios 5 or 6 years ago. Our Fios contract runs out next month and the price promo terminated this month which I knew was coming. When time permits I will call and see what they could do as far as pricing. I dont want any FREE DVR crap or FREE Movie channels (with nothing on), I want a better price.
The local cable has been very aggressively trying to get there previous customers back in our area ever since Fios has been deployed. The funny thing there is we cut the cable about 8 years prior to Fios for DishNetwork but once Fios was here thats when the Cable Co really cranked up their efforts to get us and neighbors back. The Cable Co has been to my home alone at least 10 times and has offered last year to pay the ETF each time, in fact last time they were throwing in an Ipod which I could care less about.
We have been very happy with Fios (and DSL for that matter) but I know I could do much better with cable as far as pricing. I guess I'll see soon see what VZ could do for Long time/Loyal customers. If they dont step-up on my next call into them they are history and we wont be waiting for any promos a week later if we terminate the service. |

 | Verizon ads always say "the best deal is only online". This fairly accurate. You'd be wasting your time calling them when you can sign into your account online, select the renewal link, and there you will have the best available offers. I doubt a CSR could do much better. Retentions can sometimes offer sweet deals but that is only when you request to cancel, and by that time you will already have switched to the cable company. |
|
 | I fully agree as I tried to get a better deal by walk into a Verizon Plus store less than couple months ago and found only online ordering can get activation fee waived.
Furthermore, I found best deal come via USPS after cancelling. In most cases, it is way too late as everything has been setup with new provider. |

A bit annoying that it's limited to only one year. I get Verizon flyers almost daily promoting two-year contracts but they're all for bundles. Is there any way to get Verizon to give me a 2-year contract on just internet service? |

You're misinterpreting my question. I don't need the flexibility; I want to lock in the current price for a longer term (or at least the 2 year term being offered on Verizon's other offers). |

 | reply to cbara In that case, just ask them for a 2 year contract. I'm sure they'll be more than glad to lock you up and probably give you a good price... -- .:|:. aztec being aztec... |

 | Re: Have triple play, want to cut tv & Internet If canceling triple play and retaining my home phone after a sixty day period or whenever the final invoice is closed would I qualify as a new customer if I re-upped for triple play? My better half will not allow the home number to fade away and Im really not interested in signing up with another service for 2-3 months. Any thouights? |
