Shower Cartridge Help

I have two Moen Posi-temp Shower Valves. One was installed professionally by a plumber, I loved it so much that a month later I installed one myself in our other shower. About a year in, the valve the plumber installed started to become stiff, I had the plumber come back out and he charged me to replace the cartridge (he told me to get the parts, now I know why...). A few months later the valve I installed is also stiff AND the valve that the plumber replaced the cartridge on a few months ago is also stiff. Before I call up Moen and ask them for replacement cartridges, what in the hell can be causing this? I don't want to be replacing cartridges every 6 months.

Thanks for the tip. I had time to try it out this weekend. I disassembled the cartridge, Lubed the hell out of it. Put it back in, It's still very stiff. I don't get it. I pulled the cartridge out and it looked like new. The rubber seals had no deposits, nothing looked worn. But yet when I replace it, it's fine. I better not have to keep replacing these every 6 months...

Mabe you're over-tightening the retainer nut. It needs to compress the o-rings but not be so tight it binds the cartridge.

I had this situation with a Moen Faucet. The cartridge was wearing on the top (made of Plastic) and the fine grit made it hard to turn and ultimately it wouldn't turn completely off. Replacing the cartridge was the only permanent fix.

Oh, no, not clown shoes. They mean I'm in for some mighty bad news.

It's a retainer clip, no over-tightening.

After I told Moen my distaste for having to replace the cartridge twice in a new shower valve on detroit city water after having my last two shower valves last 20+ years, they are just sending me a new cartridge... As long as it last's or they keep coming for free, that's fine with me.

I woke up to use my shower on the Feb. 5th with the original cartridge still installed (after I greased the hell out of it). Even though it was still pretty stiff the previous night even after I kept trying to work grease in. IT WAS FINE THE NEXT MORNING. A week later and it is still fine. So far so good, so it looks like tp0d's tip worked, and it just took time for the grease to work it's way to where it needed to.

Next time, disassemble the cartridge and soak for 20min in 50/50 white vinegar and water. Then rinse thoroughly, grease, and reassemble. Some of the carts are tough to take apart, but you need to get at the orings on the brass shaft inside.
