We're #1 again! (worst state to retire to)

"We actually had a numerical tie for 1st place. CT won the tie-breaker because it has much higher property taxes, income taxes, and cost of living than Illinois. It offers no exemption for social security, and most pension income is taxable. CT had the 3rd highest tax burden of any state in 2009. The Nutmeg State does have considerable charm and some terrific places to live, if you can afford to live there."

"... if you can afford to live there" says it all.

Whoever did the study probably never looked at southern IL, and that's the way the people in southern IL like it.

EDIT: Wondered why IL was up so high on the list - a flat tax is just plain flat stupid!

it's unreal for people that want to retire here... maybe it's just me but living in NC for 5 years and seeing nice large 4 acre land with a nice large sized house beats the crazyness here.

living in NC

A little off topic
The western part of NC near the Great Smoky Mountains is among my favorite places to camp. Nantahala Gorge, Clingman's Dome. I hope to get back there this May. In 2008 I rode the 570 miles of the National Park Service mountain top roads Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway to Cherokee. If you look at it one way, they are a National Park 570 miles long. I stayed in the old CCC camps along the way. Incredible beauty. I think the top speed limit is 40 MPH on both roads, but it's about the ride, not making time.

Summers in The Blue Ridge Mountains, Winters in the Garden District of New Orleans - I could retire like that.
I'll bore you with the pix.

For folks not familiar - If you drive Interstate 81 southbound through VA and points south, out your left side windows is a mountain range. Skyline Drive and The Blue Ridge Parkway are on top of those mountains you see to the east. It takes roughly three days to do the 570 miles. Well worth it.
