n2jtx join:2001-01-13 Glen Head, NY | AWS Support in iPhone 4S Humm notes that the company hasn't offered the iPhone because "we are on different band than globally the market was," adding that this "is something which will change over time" due to the evolution of chipsets. From teardown reports and analysis of the chipsets in the iPhone 4S, it has been found the iPhone 4S hardware is capable of supporting AWS on 1700MHz. The MDM6610 baseband chip in conjunction with the RTR8605 RF transceiver is capable of 1700MHz. It appears it is a firmware and/or hardware setting that prevents the iPhone 4S from utilizing AWS. The rumored N94 model of the iPhone was shown to operate on T-Mobile's AWS spectrum. From the pictures, it appears to have been an iPhone 4S prototype. When AT&T lost eclusivity, I suspect it negotiated with Apple to still prevent 1700 support because it apears that AT&T and Verizon now had exclusivity for their respective technology. Then, that exclsuivity expired last fall when Sprint and others were also allowed, but at that time, AT&T was in the midst of buying T-Mobile and would have told Apple "no 1700".
Now that all that is past and that T-Mobile appears to want to live, perhaps Apple will enable 1700 to be able to sell not only to T-Mobile but also to canadian mobile carriers who have 1700. |

n2jtx join:2001-01-13 Glen Head, NY | It would be nice if a simple firmware update could enable 1700MHz support though how 1700MHz is currently disabled in the 4S is a mystery. It is not that big a stretch to the 1700MHz band from the already supported 1800MHz band on the 4S (and I mentioned above we know the Qualcomm chips are capable). Not only would that allow T-Mobile to work with the 4S but also with WIND and Mobilicity in Canada who also utilize AWS. -- I support the right to keep and arm bears. |

 | They are only doing this in spectrum constrained market's, on spectrum constrained towers. Aka. markets with only 10mhz of AWS. In most markets they cannot deploy a 10mhz slice of UMTS because they don't have enough PCS. And since only 1/3 of T-Mobile's customers own a 3G capable device, they cannot even begin to refarm their GSM network. |
