[DIRECTV] My letter to DirecTV

Dear DIRECTV®,

As you have announced a price increase as of February 9, 2012, I'm replying to inform you I will be cancelling some services with you to reflect the total of your price increases. As you may or may not be aware, but many American households are, the economy is in the shitter, and I have simply NOT budgeted for your now-yearly Comcast-style price increases.

As you continue to raise prices through the next few years, I will continue to downgrade my services as a result of your price increases until at some point, I am certain, your services will approach what I can get for free through streaming via the Internet. At this point I will cancel your services altogether and join the ranks of the cord-cutters.

As you can see, your price increases have only launched you on a path to your own demise. I respectfully suggest you rethink your Comcast-style pricing increase timelines, after all ... that's one of the main reasons I left Comcast to come to DirecTV in the first place back in 2003.

Well, that should be all they need to convince FOX/TBS/ESPN/MLB/NFL etc. to stop demanding more and more money per subscriber each year.

I'm no fan of price increases either but it is still cheaper than both Comcast and Knology have done here. There is no way I can get the same level of service and equipment from cable that I can get with sat. Cable just rapes you with "per receiver" fees for both HD & DVR fees. With 6 HD/DVRs & 2 STBs, it would be murder.

Like posted above, it's really the cause of higher trans fees demanded by the broadcasters.

No matter who your provider is this is gonna happen. Only way out of it is cutting the cord and using OTA. I have had Comcast, U-Verse, Dish, and DirecTV and at some point all of them have increased their pricing.

yes ... a typically "corporate" response.

quote:
Dear Mr. xxxxxxx,

Thanks for writing. I certainly understand that the concern is about the price change on 2/9/12. We know that it is very important to stay on top of your finances especially with this economy. I'd be glad to help and provide you the information that you need.

First, let me share the reason of this price change. It's never an easy decision to raise prices, but we believe that it is necessary due to the increasing costs we pay to carry the channels you see. This year, the programming costs we pay to the owners of the channels we carry will increase by about 10 percent but we have adjusted the prices our customers pay by an average of only four percent. DIRECTV is constantly negotiating with the network owners to keep the cost as low as possible.

Despite the price increase DIRECTV service continues to be an outstanding value. While our prices are changing, we have continued to invest in new programming and innovative services in order to provide you the best possible entertainment experience. We assure you that we will continue to invest in the quality of your viewing experience by bringing you more new features and more new programming.

In addition, regarding your suggestion, I have forwarded your suggestion on to DIRECTV Management for review. While DIRECTV Management can not follow up individually with every customer, rest assured every suggestion and comment is reviewed. We often make changes based on customer feedback like yours.

Also, for more information on the new prices, see the New Rates for DIRECTV Service information included with your January or February bill or visit »www.directv.com/2012pricing . If you do not receive a paper bill, you should receive an email with the new pricing information in January or February.

I hope despite of this price change we can still continue giving you world-class television experience and our first priority is to be here for you whenever you need us and to provide you with prompt, courteous and excellent service.

We respect your time and I appreciate that you've given me the opportunity to personally address your concerns, Mr. xxxxxxx.

Sincerely,

Frank O. 100505685
DIRECTV Customer Service
I've cancelled services totaling about $10.00 per month in anticipation of the price increase.

Isnt it something?

A price increase MIGHT NOT BE AS BAD IF THE CONTENT WAS BETTER!

But they are raising prices FOR THE SAME GARBAGE NO ONE LIKES NOW!! (Just about anyway)

Again, thank FOX, ESPN, Spike, FX, Foxnews, etc. for the higher prices because of their demands for higher re-trans fees.

Especially FX. Got tired of seeing the Kurt Sutter commercial before the deadline stating DirecTV is gonna drop FX during one of the SOA episodes saying it was all DirecTV and not FX price gouging as usual.

Re:

IDK, IMO especially FX. They have alot of successful series per say Sons of Anarchy which gets a ton of advertising since there is a commercial lie every 5 minutes during the show. FX is raking in a ton of revenue in advertising yet raises their rates which in the long run we get screwed.

Have you though about putting up an antenna rather then using DirectTV or Cable?

I plugged your city into TVfool and it looks like you have a reasonably number of of local stations.

So then why do you subscribe to it????

I'd just like out of all sports, as that is disproportunitly at least 2/3 of your cost. The entertainment content is comparatively nothing.

And yet people keep paying for it. Hence why they charge the way they do. Very few that complain actually have the balls to cut cable/satellite and go OTA and internet( Netflix, Hulu etc )

The goal of business is to maximize profitability. As long a people continue to buy the product they would be idiots not to raise prices.

CEOs have a fiduciary responsibility to maximize profits. They are doing exactly what stockholders demand.
