 | Edge Traversal . What does it ? In the Windows Firewall list of exceptions, one of the Apps ( U Torrent) is described as : "Allow(s) µTorrent network traffic with Edge Traversal " for both TCP and UDP
Can anybody explain in PLAIN English what Edge Traversal is and what it does when it is enabled or disabled?
I got to this enigmatic animal while exploring ways to use U Torrent over a VPN Proxy Server by creating Firewall rules such that allow U Torrent traffic to be channeled only through a VPN Proxy while blocking all the traffic via Internet. If the rules are set up correctly, when I am downloading from U Torrent over a VPN proxy and I disconnect the VPN, all the peers list should disappear, indicating that the traffic is disconnected from the Internet .
Thank you

 | Edge traversal is when a NAT is taken place and the addresses need to be accessed either inbound or outbound and hence the device needs to know how to forward packets.
A VPN needs to be established. There's two types of VPN. One is a pass-thru and another is split tunnel. The pass-thru will forward all packets destined to outside thru that interface no matter where the packet needs to go.
Split tunnel will forward only certain traffic thru the firewall and all other traffic will go thru normal means of going out.
When a VPN is established and utorrent is sending traffic thru it, the utorrent will continue to send the traffic thru the regular interface when the VPN session is ended.
utorrent should be terminated before the vpn is stopped. |
 | Wow, that was fast!
You say: quote When a VPN is established and utorrent is sending traffic thru it, the utorrent will continue to send the traffic thru the regular interface when the VPN session is ended. unquote
I am a little puzzled, though, because, according to »forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=85926, if the firewall rules are set up correctly, when you disconnect the VPN not only should the list of peers disappear, but also the torrent would stop downloading ! This would be the litmus test that, by the newly created firewall rules, U Torrent would not channel the traffic through the regular interface ( the Internet, I suppose)when not connected to the VPN, thus ensuring a higher degree of anonymity.
Bottom line which one is better for anonymity : Edge Traversal enabled or disabled?
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this
