Remember when ATT was great?

Remember....
when ATT/SBC/Ameritech was great?
when we had no caps?
when they really were the best ISP out there?
when we recommended ATT to everyone?
I miss the funhouse from back in the day.
I dont understand what ATT is doing to itself.

Other then the horrid tangled mess that is their Uverse customer service they are the same to me as they've always been in the past 10 years that I can remember

Umm. Yeah- These day's, it is just a lost cause.

Oh well.. SBC is basically eating itself from within.. They are just clueless and think they can buy or lobby themselves out of everything and hire more K street attorneys and lobbyists.

A little bit of revisionist history there. Ameritech was never great. None of the ILECs (baby bells, or Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers) were, IMHO. They did everything they could to kill off the the CLECs (Competitive Local Exhcange Carriers) at the time, many of whom provided Symmetrical DSL instead of Assymetrical DSL.

What was great, IMHO, was this forum and the support people with enough guts and vision to lend a hand here. Guts because people lost their jobs for providing support here, until a visionary VP at the then SBC stepped in.

The funhouse helped so many in trying to get set up with DSL. I had one problem in 10 years, which this site helped fixed and the result was a free nid splitter. They also got me switch to fastpath.
I helped others over the years too for CPE problems.

Now it just seems like ATT just wants their company to fail. They are repeating problems they probably went through 10 years ago and now screwing customers over forcing them to pay $100 to keep their internet for a Uverse modem.
An ATT worker posted in the reviews that sounded legit saying both the sales reps and Uverse techs are told to lie to sell the $100 modems. If they dont they can be fired.
ATT has failed as a company.

There were some Ameritech folks both in sales and tech ops who risked their jobs to help people here get things going back in 2000-2001.

Ah good times.....I think DSL is also so stable now compared to the good ol' wild west days.

Thankfully, I've found my line to be more stable the last few years, thanks to the Funhouse and the AT&T Direct staff. I don't see DSL sync issues much anymore (likely because I'm forever limited to 3.0/512 INTL). However, I now have the privilege of spurts of intermittent layer 3 packet loss between my home office (AT&T) and my workplace's ISP, every day since 1/1/2012. The problem is somewhere between AT&T and Level3, such that the traceroute+ping per hop (PingPlotter & mtr 0.80) in both directions seems to prove the other side as being at fault. *sigh* This issue and U-verse skipping my cross-connect and the sucky 3.0/512 INTL sync rate, will soon cause me to switch to Comcast Business.

Yeah, me too. The site has a policy where comments about moderation can be deleted, so let's do this thread a favor and not focus on how there's now an inequality between the number of messages you can count on this page, and the number displayed on the Main Forum Page.

I think it's important to remember that everything changes, eventually, and either for the better or the worse, be it AT&T or this forum site. For a time, AT&T had a niche that provided value, and on their backbone, a superior quality of service. Now, their efforts are directed toward U-verse.

I also remember the annual get togethers. Some hosted at a members house and a few that were held at Dave & Busters. Good times meeting and putting a face to the names on the posts here.

Aye yes, and Mr. Ed Whitacre, he did the same at GM... »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Whitacre,_Jr.

Ah but alas, when he retired in 2007 the board of directors appointed Mr. Randall L. Stevenson, which by all accounts is a complete moron and buffoon [or the people that he has working for him are]. He has managed to completely disassocite the entire company, kill off the techs, customer service »youtu.be/2lQ6z_Dr8qM and create this current goofball organization.

No, I wasn't talking about Ed Whitacre. He wasn't a VP, he was the CEO and chairman.

In the past few days, I've read quite a few of your postings and watched your video, and found them difficult to comprehend. Apparently, that comprehension works both ways.

I dont know if that person who posted was Radiodoc, but I have not seen a post by 'radiodoc' in years.
I googled him and read some old posts that brought me down memory lane.
Radiodoc was a great mod and help make this site grow.
I did a search for dslreports and radiodoc.
Reading through the posts brings me back.
There were some cool reads:
Its worth reading through these posts ^ if you want to read about the history of this forum. As I said alot of cool things to read.

(People used to call him the moderator guru, lol)
»A question for the Moderator Guru Radio Doc

I found these that were a funhouse get together pictures:
»Re: Funhouse Chicago Get-together pictures
I never went to one, but I learned a lot from these guys.

Indeed. Anything involving SBC/AT&T is difficult at best to understand completely, unless you understand the context of what was going on inside the organization at the time... But really at the end of the day, what matters and is important to look at is.

1) Customer service, overwhelmingly are independent surveys of REAL customers saying the company is doing well, in terms of service and availability?

2) Is AT&T investing in their network to further enhance it, or simply playing games and blaming everything on everyone else, why their network(s) simply are horrible and even outside one of their main downtown Chicago offices do not work and this is happening throughout the country.

3) Is their Management/board of directors prudent not only to their shareholders, investor’s et al. But also to their customers, government organizations and those giving them federal funds to invest or subsidize.

4) Finally are they reshaping and making strategic organizational changes that streamline their processes. Or are they simply throwing more people, applications and processes that simply don’t work. There is a term in Computer Science GIGO; meaning if you feed Garbage into the machine or process = You are going to get garbage out. And by and large that is what seems to be at the root of their problems.

5) Are their first line technicians treated with the respect and dignity they deserve, or instead not given the proper tools and treated like children. Because ultimately those are their first line of interaction with customers, vendors, and construction workers. So if you treat your techs like garbage, you are going to get people that are NOT going to CARE or be indifferent to how the company does.

6) Are you constantly trying to as soon as that 5yr pension timeframe rolls around, find any stupid excuse to deny that faithful employee his rightly earned and deserved pension? Because that is precisely what the company does.

I could go on further… But you get the point. I understand the country and world are in economic uncertainty, but that is no excuse to not run a responsible company or violate the legal rights of your workers or customers.
