Re: [SK] Broadband 50 Slow upload

We did get speeds back to normal again. Lasted for about 3 hours. Everything has been down since (internet and home phone). The shaw reps on the phone keep telling me its the wiring in my home. The funny thing is the WHOLE neighbourhood is down. We had a sudden cold snap hit us for the past couple of days (-47 eysterday) so I wonder if that is causing issues.

-47 with the wind chill. Temperatures around -25 to -33 C.

Every thing is fixed now. Had a bad cable going from the box on the side of the house to the basement. A combination of cold weather and a flaky cable caused the signal to intermittently go up and down (according to the service tech).

At first they had my service appointment scheduled for the 23rd of this month. I called them back requesting an earlier date because my home business depends on the internet and phone. They said there was nothing that can be done. I then called back a third time and the CSR simply said "oh ok, let me reschedule that for tomorrow morning".

Maybe you should have Shaw Business Service then?

Business connections are higher quality, and not that much more than residental. I won't go back to residental connections.

Phone issues are usually booked for the next day as well.

Same here. Rocking my Business BB50 and loving it. Came with basic cable, added on two theme packs and I'm at around $110/month. All ports unblocked, plus one static for now.

I will definitely look in to that once our Shaw promotions run out. Static IP would be nice. I also wasn't aware that you can get faster service appointments with the business package.

The static is a dream, especially with all ports unblocked. Can finally run my mail server from home, along with dns, dhcp, proxy, domain controller, etc. I would highly suggest the Business side. I would definitely vouch for Sean. I switched from Residential to Business in 1-2 business days. Received an email with all my static IP info and haven't looked back since.

While your Residental promomotion is still active, and still fairly new, find out if they will switch you to a business connection, with a business promo.

I just got in the mail, phone offer for $14.95/month for one year, if ordering two lines, then unlimited longdistance included, for example.

No idea what SBM internet promos are happening right now.

Since we are on the topic...Sean could you look into the offer of a second 'wireless' line for $9.95 on the Business BB50 plan? Also, is it simply another Cisco that could be put into bridge so one would just get another line for $9.95? If it's really only that small fee for a second line, second static, that's a wicked deal.

From my research,

It is another Cisco modem, but they aren't able to, or won't put it in bridge mode.

Definately not another Static, because it wouldn't be needed to create a 2nd network for internet sharing.

The pricing going down to 9.95 is neat, might have to try it here too.

If I was going to provide free wireless internet, I would need the modem in bridge mode, for connections limiting - outbound 80 and 443 only, or 1GB per day access per device - basic features on public AP gear.

For me it would have to be another static. Plug it into my switched and move a few servers over to it. Using it as just wireless wouldn't work as I need able to be able to access all my services running on the static. Plus, my dhcp and dns server run through a virtual machine which is the only way I do it. Sean, could you look into this and provide some answers for us? Really interested if they could do another Cisco in bridge.

Yes, but the service is 'designed' for providing internet to other users, customers/employees, not being used for your network - the idea being would you give wifi access to a seperate network, instead of the same one that your systems/servers use.

I was told no before, but it would be nice if that changed. Bandwidth counter would go very high, with an unfiltered wifi connection, especially on 50mbps, that is faster then most of the wireless networks around me (both secure and unsecured).

If you pay for a second static IP, or a block of 5, any modem on the same CMTS router will work for them.

Sean, on this topic, is BB50+ still available, or has it been removed completely? It had a /29 subnet included with a few other features, over just BB50.

Maybe it still does exist...

No Rusty, you can't bridge the secondary line unfortunately.

Is it another Cisco unit or a completely different piece of equipment?

Another Cisco or SMC. Most to businesses are the Cisco units.

I am dissapointed with not being able to be bridged simplely for traffic management. Could double-NAT, but the gateway modems are not powerful enough to do NAT routing for the number of connections I get, and the inherent double-nat issue.

Yup, too unfortunate. Would be a pretty sweet deal, only if could bridge the second Cisco as well. Until then it's completely useless for me .

I believe that is part of why, to prevent businesses from just tying the 2nd modem into their primary network, and not having it shared to outsiders.

Charging only $10 for the other line, they are still making money, regardless. They aren't making AS much, which is why. From a business perspective it's smart, however us customers can still dream that someday, some option like this will be available .
