 | COX- Good 3rd party DVRs with built-in guides I currently have basic Cox cable TV (so basic that I don't even have a set top box). I'm in the market for a 3rd party DVR that has a channel guide/schedule built-in. I know Magnavox makes 250 and 500 gb units yet they lack a guide. Essentially I want the TiVo functionality without paying that pesky monthly fee. Thanks for the help in advance. |

| Pick a Tivo up off of eBay with lifetime service.
Series 2 for non-hd programming or a Series 3, TivoHD, or Premier for HD programming.
Easy-peasy.

grohgregDunno. Ask The Chief join:2001-07-05 Dawson Springs, KY | reply to mclasser I have absolutely nothing against TiVo, used to own one. But I think before committing, you should check Cox offerings. Subsidies from providers is common, subsidies from 3rd party are not. I got this off the Cox site: "Customers wishing to subscribe to Cox DVR must rent a special set top box from Cox at a price of $9.95 per month, which replaces their existing digital set top box....In addition, there is a $3.75 charge for the DVR service."

| reply to mclasser If you get a Series 2 Tivo, Cable Cards are not applicable, though you may need a basic cable box depending on how Cox has their cable plant built out in your area. Your best bet is to get the Series 3 Tivos, particularly if you want to record in high definition.
If you get a Series 3 Tivo, you will need two Cable Cards (either Single or MultiStream).
If you get a Series 3 Tivo HD you will need one MultiStream Cable Card.
If you get a Tivo Premier, you will need one MultiStream Cable Card.
If Cox has implemented Switched Digital Video (SDV) you will also need a Tuning Adapter (will be provided by Cox with the Cable Cards).
For me, Time Warner Cable charges $2.50 per month per cable card (including the necessary Tuning Adapter). So much, much cheaper than a cable box (and the Tivo functions as a cable box with guide in this regard).
If it were me, I'd look for a Series 3 Tivo HD (TCD652160) with lifetime service with an upgraded drive (meaning larger than the 160GB stock drive. Look for ones with a 1TB drive). If you can't find one with an upgraded drive, you can DIY if you're handy with that kind of thing. Instructions on how are easily available on the web.
