[Tip] This is how to Stop WMP 12 from auto playing music CDsThere is no option anywhere in the menus to disable the Windows Media Player 12 from auto playing music CDs. If you follow these steps this will rid of the auto music CD play in Windows media Player 12. This worked for me and it will work for you.
1) Start 2) Run 3) regedit 4) HKEY_CURRENT_USER 5) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software 6) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft 7) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer 8) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences 9) Click on Edit 10) Click on New 11) Select String Value 12) Type it as CDAutoPlay 13) Set it to 0 14) Reboot Computer
From now on when your running the Windows Media Player and you put in a music CD it will not auto play the music CD anymore. |

That will not work if you insert the music CD in the drive while the Windows Media Player is not running. If you insert the music CD while your running the Windows Media Player the Auto Play setting will not work and the music CD will automatically start playing.
That is why you follow those steps I wrote then after making the modification in the registry you can insert the music CD while running the Windows Media Player without having the CD start playing automatically. |

Are you saying that WMP will abort whatever is current playing and play the CD when inserted? |

If you don't put in the CD until you are ready to play it, wouldn't that work to? Why all this extra work for something simple? Thanks for the information, I didn't mean to sound harsh, sorry!! |

I have wmp9 and i just checked my registry and CDAUTOPLAY is there and its set to 0 (Even though i dont use WMP to listen to CDs,i use "CD PLAYER") |

Why all this extra work for something simple? Well, there's the case where you don't necessarily want to play it: maybe you want to check the track info first, or something. It seems to me I managed to configure this without poking in the registry. I'll check when I'm at home. EDIT: I stand corrected- I find no such setting, nor do I have my Media Player configured to not play on insert. |

natedj that is correct. It was driving me crazy as to why it lead me to find a permanent way to stop it form causing the Windows media Player to auto play the music CD and stop what I was currently listening to. |

Re: Dude111 Windows Media Player 9? What are you like on Windows XP still? The CDAutoPlay is there in registry if you have Windows Media Player 9. But if you have the latest Windows Media 12 then CDAutoPlay won't be there as to why I tell you how to create it. I'm not sure or not if CDAutoPlay is present in the registry if your using Windows Media Player 10 or 11. |

Re: [Tip] This is how to Stop WMP 12 from auto playing music CDporkpie When your coping music CDs and you go to insert the next music CD it drives a person nuts by having to click on the stop every time you insert a music CD. If you insert a music CD without running windows media player 12 it will start up and begin playing the music CD. |
|

I should also note that after making this registry modification and you insert a music without running the Windows media Player 12 it will start up but will not automatically start playing the music CD at all. |

dvd536 I never used Windows 98 or 98 SE in my life. So I wouldn't know that. I first used Windows 95 from 1995 to 2000. Then I used Windows 2000 from 2000 to 2002. Then I used Windows XP from 2002 to 2006. Then I used Windows Vista from 2006 to 2009. I have been using Windows 7 from 2009 to present. |

So Windows 98SE was an upgraded version of Windows 95?
What in Windows 98SE was different from Windows 95?
What do you mean Windows 98SE was the last OS before MS started to put the cat back in the bag? |

Windows 95 Desktop | Windows 98 Desktop |
Both desktops don't look any different at all except for the 4 button icons right next to the Start Menu on the Windows 98 desktop. |

No - I don't need the change, I was just mistakenly thinking I had previously found some way within Media Player to control it. |

said by not quite right:Why would you be listening to CDs on a computer anyhow ??? That's so 1990, rip that shit and be done with it. That would be why you would want the CD to not play immediately -- because you intend to rip it. if you have 'rip on insert' configured, it doesn't play. But in some cases you want to fiddle with things before starting to rip, perhaps because the internet sources for track content aren't even close so there's a lot of manual editing to be done. (Yeah, you can do that after, but I find it's more straightforward to get it right first). If you turn off rip-on-insert, you get play-on-insert. Shift key works, I think. |
