Router and Access Point at the same time?

I have a wireless network upstairs, and a separate wireless network downstairs. I was using the Linksys WAP54G to connect the upstairs internet to the downstairs router but the WAP54G died. I then bought the Asus RT-N13B thinking I could use it as a router and connect to the internet from upstairs but it doesn't work that way.

Is there a fairly cheap router that can connect to a wireless internet connection and still be used as a router?

HI Bob your post is a bit confusing but here is my advice.

Have one router in your house actually doing the routing. Any other scenario can get complicated and obstructs networking.
It is quite common to use old wifi routers as simply AP/Switches.
(one can even use an action tech which as coax outputs as an AP/ethernet switch/coax switch if not setup as a router.

The question becomes did you mean you want to have to separate wirless networks and if so why. The better you articulate your connection (ISP single dual, how many WANIPs) and your network requirements (users, devices, security, isolations....etc) the better answers we can give here.

For example, there are Wifi Routers or APs that provide separate wifi networks. There are routers that can segregate the wired networks......... lots of options.

Tomato (any variant that I'm aware of, actually) can connect to a wifi network as WAN.
