[DVR] eSATA Drive to Use with IMG 1.9

Now that I have img 1.9 I'm looking into adding the external drive.
The Western Digital drive that FIOS favors seems to be a hard thing to find lately. My Google searches haven't yielded many good results. I'm guessing this is due to the flooding in the far east.
Based on my reading here I'm thinking that any eSATA drive that is 2TB or less and has an eSATA interface should work.
I'd be interested to hear what drives others are using. Thanks

See this thread:
»[DVR] Build Your Own FiOS v1.9 DVR External Hard Drive???

and the 1st post of this one:
»[DVR] Unsupported eSATA - Summarized

HD's are expensive now as they've been in years, twice as much as the "antediluvian" prices. If you can hold off for a while you'll save a lot of money.

Fantom GreenDrive 2 TB USB 2.0/eSATA External Hard Drive (GD2000EU32)

But as suggested, waiting may be a good idea.

I purchased it for more then 50% off the current prices.

I got the WD DVR Expander 1TB for $95 inc shipping after messing around with some coupon codes. I got it in December.

»store.westerndigital.com/store/w···20190900

Out of stock now.

Got it just before what ended up being yet another aborted update.

But I guess worked out since now I have it and get to use it

Keep an eye out on e-bay. I was going to wait but after reading that prices probably won't go back to where they were before the flooding until the 3rd quarter of this year at the earliest I bit the bullet and bought one of the Verizon "approved" western digital models off of e-bay.....1tb dvr extender for $130 which, in this market, isn't too bad.

Thanks, just checked e-bay. Looks like $150 is the current going rate.

Yeah I got the western digital 1TB for $159.99 including shipping from amazon with 1 days shipping. Good thing I got it the day I did, because the very next day the same seller was selling them for $234.99 used and $259.99 brand new. Mines was a used like new drive. Set up was quick and painless. Activated the eSATA port connected the drive, formated and reboot the box and all was good. the entire process took less than 5 minutes.

How would the Western digital elements 2TB external work with this?

Does anyone know if this drive works with the FiOS Motorola 7232 DVR for extra storage ?

Fantom Drive GD1500EU64 GreenDrive 3.5" External Hard Drive - 1.5TB, USB 2.0 / eSATA

On sale now at Tig***D** for $99.99 w/free ship

If it works, it seems like a good deal given the recent price of hard drives.

There are reviews on TD site from people that say they have used them with mixed results. One person said great, another said it didn't initialize more than 1TB.

Purchased the Fantom Drive GD1500EU64 GreenDrive 3.5" External Hard Drive - 1.5TB, USB 2.0 / eSATA and installed it last night. Auto formated quickly. I did a test recording last night of 2 movies simultaneously and it worked. Both movies played back when I check them this morning. I looked on the box afterward and noticed the bus was only listed at 1.5 not 3.0 but it
seems to be working fine. It has a large cache 64 meg. don't know if that's a factor or not. Got it for $99.99 w/free ship.

I bought the same one from Tiger Direct and had the same experience. It's worked fine so far and it's quiet.

I'm having a problem. I bought this drive (Fantom GreenDrive 2 TB USB 2.0/eSATA External Hard Drive (GD2000EU32)) but when I try to record two programs simultaneously on my 7232 it always locks-up/reboots. Do I have a bad one? Anyone else experience this?

The Greendrive is not a DVR-compatible eSATA. It sounds like that has a sleep function.

All I can tell you is that I have had no such issue with mine.

I can't at first impression see how your issue is the fault of whatever external you might be using.

I also have a Greendrive as a backup to my desktop and it obviously does has some sleep function.

Fantom states that their drives are compatible as a DVR extender.

Whether or not there is a sleep feature, I can attest that the Fantom Greendrive I have used for months works fine (immediately available, no lag) with the FIOS DVR.

Wish I could say the same. I bought the WD 2 TB wd20eurs suggested in the article link on the second post here and also the Rosewill rx358 enclosure, as the other one suggested was out of stock, and have seen much more lag and when recordings start or end, the screen on what you are watching locks up momentarily.

not sure if it's the drive or the enclosure, BUT we love the 2 TB and as it is it's already 90% full so I had to kill a bunch of cooking shows and Anthony Burdaine's shows too. my grandkids are recording a bunch of cartoons

edit. when hard drives come down to earth again I will keep an eye out for WD or Seagate making a 6 Gb SATA III version of the drives and a SATA III enclosure to see if that helps out and re-use that WD drive in my computer. I do know the 7232 will still be the weak link , but hope is .....

You realize that a 6 TB drive would give you no advantage over the 2 TB, right? The DVR DOES NOT RECOGNIZE ?UTILIZE ANYTHING OVER 2 TB!!!

I had similar issues with my 2 TB Fantom GreenDrive and have since replaced it with a Seagaet home built up unit. Now it all works fine. Some folks have had good luck with the Fantom, some have not.
