jabarnutLight Years AwayPremium,MVM join:2005-01-22 Galaxy M31 kudos:2 | Eye Floaters-Anyone had or have them? Damn...just developed some eye floaters on my left eye. And it came on rather suddenly. Naturally, after doing some research on the net, it scared the crap out of me that maybe I had a detached retina or some other serious problem. Went to the eye Dr. for a complete exam, and everything checked out "fine", or so he said. Just something I have to "get used to", he said. In fact, he said I have them in both eyes, although my other eye is clear as can be.
How am I supposed to get "used to" a giant hairy black spider, along with what look like a million tiny eggs, right in my field of vision? It's driving me insane at the moment. I'm almost considering wearing an eye patch sometimes just so I don't have to look at the thing swirling around in there. Feel like I'm back in the 60's again, but this time it's no fun at all.
He said in some cases laser surgery can be effective, but it's risky and he didn't recommend it. Am I really going to get accustomed to a hairy spider living in my eyeball? -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

Your eyes have Tebowitis..
Nothing to worry about.. |

sailorPremium join:2003-10-21 Long Island kudos:6 | reply to jabarnut On a serious note, I had the same thing happen to me about 8 months ago....saw what seemed like hundreds of floaters in both eyes..and it happened so suddenly as I was just looking out my sliding glass doors to the backyard...my eye doc is within walking distance so I walked there as I didn't want to risk driving...
Eye doc was out but an associate doc was there...after telling the girl at the desk what I was experiencing they took me right in as soon as he finished with the patient he was seeing...
Gave me complete and thorough eye exam and testing and told me no detached retina and that I was lucky that I didn't have one....told me he saw what I was seeing but more then likely stress related and told me he expected them to clear up on their own.
But he did say if I should happen in the future to also see bright flashes of light in my vision or if my vision seems like one side of it is suddenly shaded.....like a curtain pulled over half of your eye...to immediately walk again to the office....or to go to the ER if they were closed.
I was going through a lot of stress at the time and they cleared up on their own...still see black spider strings at time but nowhere like how many I saw that day...
So I wouldn't be concerned if I was you...could be stress at the time or age related or both. But you did the right thing in seeing the eye doc.... |

(Including the thing about any bright flashes or shaded areas...none of which I'm seeing at the moment). I sure hope mine get a little better eventually like yours did. Heh...if it is in fact somehow stress related, that whole Tebow joke may not have been such a joke after all). lol -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

jabarnutLight Years AwayPremium,MVM join:2005-01-22 Galaxy M31 kudos:2 | Well, as far as the ER, my Dr didn't mention that specifically, but I asked him what would happen if I did in fact have a detached retina, and he said: "Well, if you want to see again, you would need surgery asap". So, I guess that sort of explains the ER, if an Eye Specialist isn't readily available. He also said that detached retinas are pretty rare...that he only sees them in maybe 1 out of 100 cases where people come in with floaters....or something like that -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

| reply to jabarnut I have had these floaters all my life it seems, but lately, I do see what seems like a strobe light in my right eye when I hit the sack. It seems to occur only when I'm very tired, and have been at the monitor all day & all night. -- ~ Project Hope ~ |

sailorPremium join:2003-10-21 Long Island kudos:6 | reply to EUS The way the eye doc explained it to me he described seeing what appeared to me to be hundreds of floaters and in addition very bright white flashes of light associated with them.....which I have never seen...so best for you would probably be to make an eye exam appointment..
I've had floaters most of my adult life but never like I had that day....I see a couple a few times a week but never so bad that they suddenly grab my attention...until that day...
In my case, after seeing the doc, it took about 4 days for them to clear up where I just happened to notice I was no longer seeing them....then about 3 days after that they came back...but only to go away within 12 or so hours...
I also have suffered a mild brain stroke approximately 4 years ago so I got really concerned when I suddenly saw what seemed like hundreds of them that day in both eyes...it happened so instantly...one moment floater free and then bam......seemed like my entire vision was filled with floaters...but my eyesight was still good...even while seeing all those floaters...no blurry vision....I wasn't having like the usual symptons of a stroke taking place but I was concerned enough to walk to the eye doctors office...and am glad I did.
According to the doc, a detached retina is the usual cause of suddenly seeing so many....that is what he immediately thought in my case until he examined me....he told me I was lucky that I didn't suffer a detached retina from what I described to him was happening to me.
I would suggest having your eyes looked at. |

Yes..not sure when your last Eye exam was, but if it's been a while, it sure wouldn't hurt to have them checked out. Believe me, I hate seeing any kind of Dr, but this scared me enough that I couldn't wait to "see" him. The posibility of not being able to see anything at all was enough to get me there really fast. -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |
