[T-Mobile] Throttled after 5gb of 4G: changing APN useless

It had been reported by changing your T-Mobile APN to voicestream you could avoid being throttled. So I wanted to test this theory.

I can tell you it's just not so. Tried all 3 from voicestream and one from Simple Mobile. Throttled to 100kbps up/down but what kills me is the latency went from 60ms average to 200ms average.

T-Mobile was so kind to send me text letting me know I was at 2G speeds.

5gb of 4G for $30 is still a great value.

I have not experienced throttling, yet, and I pay $20 a month for my data plan. There have been months that I go way over 4 GB, but on average it is slightly more than 4 GB. This month it looks like it will be quite a bit over 4GB as I have used 3.2 GB already, according to My T-Mobile. The funny thing is the data usage summary always shows '0 MB/unlimited used', although the itemized details always show accurate usage.

Nothing you can do anymore. Your stuck. (Btw, the cap i get is 64kbps down and pings around 800ms from 45-50ms. I was briefly able to get around it by deleting the throttling file in the system via root but it just sets the throttling by the network.

Needless to day, i have a spare line and use that up instead now. (granted it costs more but im stuck with the line for another year and a few months anyway. Thank god for google voice!)

You are right about the latency. Ran a trace route, showing 400-2000ms ping times!

Throttling to 64kbps @ 50ms is still usable for mobile web. But artificially increasing the latency beyond that is just wrong!

The fact the don't cut you off is still good, and those on Sprint while they say it's unlimited, they threaten to cancel you if you keep using large amounts of data. T-Mobile just throttles you to my knowledge.

I haven't had mobile data in years due to how very quickly the prices became very expensive, but T-Mobile does have some prepaid plans which are the same also, one as cheap as $30 with a small amount of minutes for those people who mostly wanted to text/use the internet.

Who has been threatened they would be canceled if they use to much sprint data on phones, that ISN'T roaming?

I was thinking the same thing! During the brief trial of sprint, it was clearly listed i only had 500Mb of roaming data. That was all. (Granted all roaming i did was 1xrtt. lol)

Actually i thought it was 300 MBs, at least in my terms of service and all of the ones I have seen. Maybe you had a special account.
