DBinSJ join:2012-01-12 San Jose, CA | [DISH] Do DirecTV & Dish Network Use the Same Type of Cable? The reason I ask is that we would like to switch from DirecTV to Dish Network but are less likely to do so if the cable would need to be replaced. (It took a lot of work to get it installed and, as tenants, we are responsible for damage to the unit.) Tried asking Dish Network but couldn't get a straight answer. Any insight would be appreciated! |

You can set everything up, have them come out, and tell them the deal. If he/she balks, tell them to leave.... You have no obligation and can back out at this point still. |

| reply to DBinSJ My recent Dish install reused the existing RG6 from the cable TV company. The guy looked at it when I told him I'd prefer he use it if he can and he had no problem. He had to run some cables from the dish to the same common distribution point that cable had used, but he used the existing cable for the rest of it except he replaced the F connectors at both ends of each run because the connectors he used were rated better for the higher frequencies from the dish. |

| reply to DBinSJ My DirecTV install in 2010 reused the existing cabling that was installed in a 2009-ish U-Verse install. (I bought the house in 2010), and the only thing he did was cut off the end connectors, and replaced them with ones that were "DirecTV approved". The cable itself was left in place, and has worked perfectly since day 1. -- "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" |

Typically, yes. But an accurate response depends upon the grade of cable vs type of service. If you copy down the long string of letters and numbers that are printed on the cable sheathing, I might be able to determine what cable you currently have. Also make sure that you don't have a cable mix. Look where ever the markings are visible to determine if the same cable has been used all the way from the dish to the TV(s)

grohgregDunno. Ask The Chief join:2001-07-05 Dawson Springs, KY 2 edits | Not enough info, sorry. Quality cable often has sufficient data printed on it that - when translated - reveals the manuf/make/model/etc. Was hopin' to help you with that, but there's not enough numbers. If you have the option, determine if the DISH installer will use 3GHz BC with at least two shields (best for HDTV). Flooded cable is a bonus if there's water or moisture in the cable path, it's self-sealing when damaged. If you get a good feeling from the DISH buy - don't gamble on what's already there - let him install his own cable.
