[Embarq] Zyxel 660 FREQUENTLY drops connection, DNS issue?

I am troubleshooting neighbors system. Not sure if it is Embarq or centuryTel. sry.

I am constantly monitoring the router through a wireless connection courtesy a meraki node.

The problem: Clients inform me, and I have confirmed thru Meraki dashboard, that the connection drops frequently. Last couple of days, the system goes down several times a day, and I have to log on to the router, and reboot it. I am able to log in via the wireless connection, so it is obvious that that is not the problem, as it is also obvious that the 660 is still powered. Each time the system fails, 'web configurator statistics' 'WAN port Statistics' shows 0 Rx B/s. Additionally, in WAN info , Active, Primary, and Secondary DNS will all list as 0.0.0.0 Then I go into diagnostics, general, and reset the system, it starts to work again, for a random length of time.
The modem was just replaced recently, because my neighbor contacted customer service, before I got involved, and had a new modem sent out, due, apparently, to this same problem.
As I have, I believe, traced the problem back to the wall outlet, is it possible that it is a problem with inside-the-home wiring? Or is it a problem with DNS servers? Can I reset to OpenDNS? Thanks, and I hope I have provided all pertinent info.

The 660 has a section to run line diagnostics (sorry, I'm not at home so I can't tell you what path to follow). It may be helpful to check the line noise & attenuation.

If the modem keeps losing sync, and needs to be reset, it is either a wiring, line, or modem issue. Since the modem has been replaced, it's likely either the line or the wiring. [Do they have an alarm system connected to the phone line?]

First thing to do is have them connect the modem directly to the NID and get the statistics again. See if there is a significant difference between the readings. The attenuation and noise margin are the numbers to watch.

Have them check their own wiring. Unless there is a whole-house filter at the NID, every device connected to a phone jack needs to have a filter on it, except for the modem. There is a two port filter to use if they need a phone next to the modem.

If you can't find anything that is causing a problem, then they will need to call for a line check. There could be an issue in the line between the NID and the DSLAM, and it could be a failing port on the DSLAM.

Additionally, customer/neighbor just told me that connection is frequently lost when phobe calls are received.

The drop in the Noise Margin from 30 to 16 and the attenuation increase from 25 to 27 between the NID and the inside jack indicates an internal wiring problem. It could be as simple as a bad or missing filter, indicated by the connection drop when calls are active, and it could be corroded connections somewhere in the wiring.

Check all the phone jacks in the house. Every one with a device attached needs a filter, except the modem jack. There are two-port filters available if a phone needs connected next to the modem.

If this does not clear up the problem, I would recommend a whole-house filter at the NID. The voice side would connect to the existing house wiring, the data side would connect to a new wire run to a new jack specifically for the modem.
