From ATT 4.3Mbps to Sonic 3.1Mbps?

Hi! I've been a Sonic Fusion subscriber for several months now.

I switched from AT&T DSL to Sonic Fusion when AT&T started their data caps- which I hated.

Overall, I've been happy with the Sonic service. Only one thing has been gnawing at me.

When with AT&T DSL, I had the Elite package (~6.0 Mbps) and got around 4.3Mbps at the beginning. I did notice that it did drop to 3.0Mbps towards the end of my service with AT&T a couple of years later.

When switching to Sonic, I only get around 3.1 Mbps. My distance from the CO is >9000 ft.

I understand that distance from CO will affect my broadband speed.

My question is: why can't I get the original 4.3 Mbps I was getting from AT&T with Sonic? Did AT&T drop my DSL profile from 4.3Mbps to 3.0 Mbps. If so, how can I get my DSL line to be "fixed."

I appreciate any help with this matter.

Thanks in advance,
zelfred (Sonic username)

First the Bad News: I'm afraid your above statement most likely reflects the the deterioration of your AT&T copper pair, which Sonic has to use for Fusion service.

Now the Good News: Call the excellent Sonic tech support and have them check your line.

I had a similar situation; Sonic found a problem on my line, so that AT&T switched my copper pair.

EDIT: added excellent to Sonic tech support.

If you did not tell Sonic what speed you got, AT&T likely just provisioned the change to the Pro (3Mbps) speed. There is another member here that had the same experience as you're having. Unfortunately for that individual there was nothing Sonic could do as AT&T has refused to requalify the line to Elite (6Mbps).

There is a new wrinkle to your experience and that is your speed had dropped from 4.3 to 3.1Mbps while you were with AT&T. Unless you saved your stats before the transition, I would probably agree with Tobester in that your line has deteriorated between the time when you first got AT&T DSL and when you migrated to Sonic.

You can probably confirm by getting the stats off your modem. For example, my modem shows current downstream rate of 6016 with a maximum 9115Kbps.

Thanks for the correction Tobester. I did not notice that zelfred has Fusion and though it was legacy DSL.

Zelfred stated he has Sonic Fusion service.

Sonic does not cap your Fusion line artificially, your speeds are based on the capacity of your copper loop.
AT&T does not enter the picture with caps on a Fusion circuit.

I believe you are confusing the Sonic DSL service with Sonic Fusion ADSL2+ service.

Sincerely,
Tobester.

Hello zelfred,

I took a look at your line and made a couple of changes to see if we could get a bit more speed out of it. Please send us an e-mail to support@sonic.net if your line becomes unstable and we can try some other possibilities.

Thank you everyone for your responses.

mythgard, I ran a speed test last night and the speed is still the same. Thank you though for looking into it. I hadn't yet reset my modem so I'll give that a try.

So on another note... I'm still a little unclear. If AT&T did classify my line as a Pro Line (3Mbps), how can I force AT&T to reclassify it? I still have my monthly statements, where it states I subscribed to Elite. Would that be enough for AT&T to do something?

Whether or not AT&T changed your line classification wouldn't make a difference now. With Fusion, Sonic sets the profile (or lack of one) so that if your line quality can support it, you can use it. So the bad news is there is probably nothing artificially capping your line speed - your line quality has apparently degraded from when you first got DSL. Now you just need to figure out why that is. Contacting Sonic support would probably be the best place to start.

I can understand how sometimes it does seem confusing, but we've all been there too.

Previously, AT&T reclassified your line (lowering your maximum possible speed) because you were having problem attaining the "Elite" level of service without line issues.

It is an indication of a poor quality copper loop from your Central Office, of which Sonic has no control.

Now that you have Sonic Fusion, your line is uncapped; however, the poor copper circuit on which Fusion must travel will remain as a problem for your attainment of higher speeds.

From your initial posting, it certainly sounds like your Sonic Fusion ADSL2+ speeds aren't any slower than what you achieved when you left the old AT&T DSL.

I know that's a bummer

With the whole Fusion package of features and no data caps, I'm saving money compared to my old AT&T bill and I'm supporting a local company who truly seems to appreciate my business.

Perhaps, if we support good versus evil (AT&T) eventually we will get fiber to the home in San Francisco.

Welcome to the Forum!

Tobester.
