 | My laptop can't find our wifi but all other devices do... Hi,
I am staying with friends for a few weeks and have brought my laptop with me. I have never had any problems connecting to any wireless network but it will not find their router even though my iphone & any other device that tries to find it finds it ok. I have tried connecting manually & also tried plugging the ethernet cable into my laptop (internet will work then) but it still will not find the wireless connection. I would use the cable but it would mean sitting under the stairs whenever I want to use the internet
I'm probably being a right divvy but would appreciate any help.
Thanks!!! |

 | reply to dizibird Which wireless software are you using? The inbuilt Windows?
To be sure, I'd get Netstumbler and / or inssider and see if it at least sees your friend's wireless network signal or not.

 | reply to dizibird Thanks, the hardware switch is on & I have installed both netstumbler & inssider but the stupid computer still can't find the network Grrrrrr!!! I am getting very frustrated! Iphones are great but I much prefer real computers for booking flights etc... |

 | reply to dizibird Just your friend's network or ALL wireless networks?
If the latter, sounds like the wireless card may be hooped. If the former, I can't explain why that'd happen.

There may be a compatibility issue at play. A "B" or "G" card will not connect to a router that is configured as "N" only for example. (non mixed-mode). This is an option in the router. Wireless is backwards compatible but can be modified by the user. Mixed mode allows compatibility as the router pushes out the required frequencies. Some people turn mixed mode off to gain the best frequency for their devices.
SSID broadcast enabled? If not, that would explain why you aren't seeing it. Some turn it off as a (poor) means to avoid intrusion.
If you know the network details, you can setup a manual connection even if SSID is not being broadcast.
Netstumbler does not show non-broadcasted SSID's unless that has changed in recent versions. Not sure about Inssider - a brief google search indicates v2 supported finding hidden ssid's. It may be a feature / option you have to enable though. |
