Original MagicJack Price Increase 1/20/12

Original MJ Price Increase
Received on January 13, 2012.

I doubt there is much justification for this price increase beyond making more cash off of their customers. Usually, inventive products like MagicJack are most expensive when they first arrive on the market, not the other way around. I am disappointed with MagicJack, but I can't seem to find a better or more affordable alternative. They have a bit of a monopoly, so there's not much I can do. I'm going to be on the lookout for something better in the future, though.

Try netTALK DUO, they are the same (new) price as MJ, but you get more features, and live customer service 24/7, also the voice quality is better.

Agreed! I'm extremley suspicious ... first they push hard to sell the new PLUS device, now they push hard to get existing customers to renew for 5 years. I've seen other companies that push hard to get CASH in the door .... usally RIGHT BEFORE THEY DECLARE CHAPTER 11.

33% increase (seems high)? What was your salary increase? ( if your lucky, about 10% of the ammount MJ is trying to GOUGE. Not employed? Trying to save money by using magic jack? There are other alternatives. What once was a good deal is the latest bait and switch. Do not lock yourself into technology for 5 years at an inflated price. After about a year, what you have bought will be terribly outdated and costly.Google search any of the alternatives. Tell me about what you find for voip because I`m in the market for a new provider.

Oh Lord. People are complaining about paying $30 a year for phone service ? MagicJack has served me well since 2009. I will be more than happy to pay $30 a year for continued service. Wow...like $2.50 a month ? The service could go out of business tomorrow and I could not possibly complain about losing that amount of money. My MagicJack always works. No complaints.

DirecTV is pretty neat. If you want a referral ask me.

It's actually a 50% increase. 33% would be about $26.65

just sayin'....:)

kanos

@comcast.net

not everyone knows how to do basic math Russ, 33% is funny how they stated that....

1 year @ $19.95 // 50% = $9.975 (currently)
1 year @ $29.95 // 50% = $14.975 (future price)

Okay, so lets look at the numbers here...

50% of 19.95 = 9.975

Lets take 19.95 + 9.975 (the 50% increase) and you get == 29.925

So actually it is just a little over 50%...

Everything Dan Borislow does, is to make himself wealthier and to increase shareholder value. He is am absolute genius technologically, and incredible marketer. He has his human flaws which are like a wart with hair growing out of it on the end of a nose. He's flawed as a human, but good for business.

He has supposedly 8 million sold. What percent renews? Multiply that by the 50% annual increase plus 365,000 units sold x 69 and you have a helluva financial quarter. Stock split and is increasing. Borislow is a genius.

The plan was FREE telephone service, but it costs an initial investment of $29 or $39, but now $69 for the plus.

So, in reality, it's not free. You have to buy iit.

Secondly, he changes access to other phone networks daily. If he can't make a profit, your call won't connect to the party you're calling.

But, for $29 per year, you can't beat it.

How much are you paying for your landline monthly today?

This thing works!

Just bought a year. There's some tax involved.

I spent some time on the phone today (01/19/12) with MJ support. Besides waiting 20 minutes for a chat...I asked what features will be enhanced with a 50% increase in cost. Support responded, "the rates are not going up 50%, they are just increasing." Say wha'?! The original MJ was $17.95, then $19.95, now $29.95 with NO feature enhancement. So really the price has just been "MagicJacked Up!" nice.

MJ, throw us a bone, how about at least a contact list that has categories and can be listed in alpha order-hmmm. Or how about a FaxJack? Something for a 50% rate increase!

I've been a customer since 2010. I paid for 1 year Dec. 2010 and then received a customer renewal email in August of 2011. I paid for 1 year August 2011 $21.23 (tax in) and should be good thru August 2012. Now I have the same price increase notice and must renew now in order to stay with the 2008/2011 price. Just when do I get to have a full year that I paid for? ie short 4 months for 2010 and short 7 months for 2011. What am I missing here in MJ communications? Quite the scam indeed.

My partner and I have used the Magicjack since 2008. He has the device in Shanghai, China and uses it to call the US. It works great for that. After the original subscription, I renewed for one year. Then when that was expiring, I took advantage of a sale and did a 5 year renewal for $49. We're not due to expire until sometime in 2014, now.

It would be nice if they would allow transfer of plan to the new Plus device, but they don't. So, we'll just keep the device we have and enjoy the service until 2014. At that time, we'll see what is offered and go from there.

Mine is set to expire early in 2015. That's my plan as well ...

Why don't you ask the exact same question to the oil companies, as well as the telecoms to freeze their rates forever, as well?

Succeed, and you will be lauded as an international hero.

My partner and I have been using a Magicjack since 2008. He is in Shanghai, I'm in the US. He has the device there, uses it to call me and others back here in the States and I can call him just like calling a friend down the street. Saves a ton of money. The only problem we have is more to do with the GFW in China. We found that if he connects using a VPN the call is far more stable and clear. Our conversations typically last hours at a time.
