Are there others I should try? I see there is a Actiontec GT701d
I don't need the wireless part. I am looking for a little more speed. I did get more upload speed.

 | Re: [modem/router] which modem should I upgrade too from Westel I don't think trying another modem will solve your problem. Your noise margins are good but your line attenuation seems to indicate you are either very far away from your C.O. or you have a bad connection. -- "Remember, Comrade, people who are willing to destroy an efficient telephone system may not be playing with a full deck." |

 | reply to ken2400 you are on an old plan. you should be able to get at least a free upgrade to one meg down / 384 up. it would be 1184 down / 448 up before "overhead". Your line should also be able to support 1.5 down / 384 up provisioning. Call and inquire about the free upgrade to 1 meg or if 1.5 is available (marketed as 1.1-3 meg plan your line would be provisioned at 1.5 (1792 before overhead). There is no need to change the modem. |
 | reply to Alex G Bell Yes I am about 20000 feet I think? Verizon has changed me to a new line twice in 5 years. |
 | reply to Jodokast96 768 K They only offer that and 1.5 where I live |
 | reply to norbert26 So I will be going to dry line DSL since I have been checking out Vonage. Will the force me to 1.5 meg?
What magic words or dance do I need to say or do to Verizon to get this upgrade you speak of?
Thanks for the info. |
 | reply to ken2400 Are those Transceiver Stats representative of what is realized with the modem & computer attached directly to the Verizon Box (NID) where the service enters your building?
FWIW, before questioning my Speeds or Transceiver Stats I would first hookup to the NID to make sure that I am not experiencing any indoor wiring issues. |
 | Yes I get the same speed at the NID box and direct connected the computer to the DSL modem.
I do get faster upload speed with newer DSL modems. |

Thanks for the info. call the normal verizon sales number navigate the menus try account changes. Ask the sales rep is there is a free upgrade to 1 meg available for your account. You can also ask if 1.5 is available for your line it all depends how they have it in their data base on what they will offer. keep in mind if you go dry loop it will be $10 more and you MUST pay by credit/debit card. Instead of dry loop i recommend dropping the phone to the lowest cost measured service with no long distance . It allows about 90 minutes of local calling a month . You would still use the Vonage for your long distance and unlimited local calling with the benefit of a local backup landline. |
 | I have message rate and no long distance carrier as it stands now. Thanks for confirming this is a cheaper way to go.
I will call and ask them.

 | reply to norbert26 I called and Verizon said There books only say 768 is my max speed because of distance. 20K feet I would end up paying $29.?? when I go do dry loop.
That does it, time for dry loop and new DSL modem or Time Warner. Need to find a way to pay them less |
