LibraPremium join:2003-08-06 USA kudos:1 1 edit | WAYJAK, was I supposed to add my laptop in my Private Networ I set up my access point and after a short while I used it for a new laptop. I noticed that it has opendns (as configured in my westell modem/router) which I'm happy about. When I set up the laptop I chose PUBLIC network since I think that's safer.
Did I make a mistake and what's the difference? Thank you.
Edit: When I look at ipconfig on the laptop it says this:
Connection specific DNS suffix.: Tunnel adapter isatap westell.com Media State: media disconnected connection specific dns suffix: westell.com tunnel adapter local area connection*12: media state: media disconnected connection specific DNS suffix.:
it has two more tunnel adapter entries (one for isatap and one for teredo psuedo-interface) and IPv6 address and Link local IPv address (with long numbers) followed by: default gateway .:
I also noticed on my destop ipconfigs I now have that media disconnected listed and some long numbers. Since I never had it before, I assumed it has to do with the AP being connected.
Everything is working well, I'm just curious/concerned about the Network. Thanks.
Sincerely, Libra |

When you set a network to be public the computers firewall settings are changed Your computers/access point are behind the westell modem which has a firewall, I would have chosen home networksaid by Libra:I also noticed on my destop ipconfigs I now have that media disconnected listed and some long numbers. I changed the network setting, but it put the laptop into a homegroup - since all my computers aren't Windows 7, I disconnected from the homegroup it created. Prior to disconnecting I unchecked any sharing it had checked.
IS THIS CORRECT? It shows:
laptop________________SSID_______________Internet
SSID: Home Network Wireless Connection Connection: Internet
(It shows the SSID as my home network and it shows a wireless connection. It's not showing the Westell.)
It doesn't show my 2 other computers and when I clicked on "network map" it said "Windows cannot discover any computer or device".
(My other computers see eachother. I can't see any files between computers because I don't have the same usernames/passwords on them but I do share a network printer connected with an ethernet cable.)
Is this okay?

LibraPremium join:2003-08-06 USA kudos:1 | reply to Libra I just checked the desktop computers Network information:
Vista desktop shows:
PC_____________Network______X___________Internet Network: Private Network Access: Local Only Connection: Local Area Connection
Win7 Desktop shows:
PC__________Network_______X______________Internet Network:Home Network Access type: No internet access Home Group: Ready to create Connections: Local Area Connection

Vista's Map shows:
Vista~~~~~~~~ Switch~~~~~Gateway~~~X~~~~Internet
Wireless Router~~
The following discovered devices cannot be placed in the map:
Windows 7 Desktop.
Comparing this to the info in my previous post, is the laptop Network change that I made correct and secure?
Thank you.
