 | P2P file sharing network? (not the internet though) Has anyone ever thought of this? I am right now lol...
Why couldn't you connect multiple homes, towns etc all with wireless networking WISP equipment, so they're all connected on the network.
Then, modify some P2P file sharing software, so each computer makes a list of it's uptime, files, etc to determin reliability, then, the P2P software would be different because it would automatically download and share files that are desired and not shared enough.
This would allow a giant network to share movies and files without even connecting to the internet. |

(wifi using 3ft dish antennas will go about 40 miles at 30-50Mbps...) |

 | reply to parkland May I ask how this would be in this forum? This isnt wireless forum but a WISP forum. |

 | reply to parkland Your idea is terrible.
You need line of sight plus Fresnel zone clearance to use 5.8ghz.
You are unlikely to get any sort of range out of 2.4ghz due to the high noise floor.
And with 900mhz noise is will likely be too bad and there is not much spectrum.
If you want to build something that likely will be slower then the internet in most city's on the download and probably only get 2-3 people at the most you can get line of sight to and risk a leaking roof go for it. |

| reply to noisy said by noisy :Your idea is terrible. Not at all. Its been proposed that extremely large entirely mesh wifi networks are possible with the right logical models on home grade equipment.
Also your idea of 2.4 GHz propagation is off base. 2.4 Ghz is quite capable of 1 mile ranges with very modest equipment.
3+ miles is possible with not so modest equipment, specifically larger dishes.
And in Cities distance is not so much an issue but smart controlled routing is.
Home based routers are becoming powerful enough to run the logic and extra protocols needed to do just this.
What is needed are PEERS willing to run nodes and such. You need lots of them. |

1 edit | I have seen some modded parabolic wifi dishes made out of unused DirectTV/DishNetwork satellite dishes, that were able to to pickup networks 7Km away. Saw a similar mod with a Big Dish antenna that was pulling in networks up to 120Km away.

Cantenna's work great and usually can be built very cheaply, like a few dollars. |
