[Other] Confused about a switch issue

This is the current setup: Internet ---> pfsense Firewall ---> 802.11n AP ---> 802.11n Bridge ----> Switch ---> Stuff

For the last few days the LAN card on the firewall has been crapping out and for some reason when it does the switch needs to be power cycled.

Since I know the cause of the issues I want to know why the switch acts like this and anything that can point me in the right direction is greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by "crapping out"? How do you know the NIC is killing the switch and not vice-versa?

It sounds like the wireless setup is "layer 2 transparent". The switch sees the firewall as if it were directly connected. If it learns an incorrect MAC on that port, it won't unlearn it for several hours. As it cannot see a link state change for something not connected to it, it won't know anything is wrong. (of course, the AP and bridge could be doing the same, but I wouldn't bet on it.)

Try unplugging the network cable between the bridge and switch next time it happens. A few seconds should be enough to get the switch to clear it's MAC table(s) for that port.

Second clarknova. To rule out the switch, can any of the "stuff" behind the switch pass
data amongst themselves when the LAN card on the firewall "craps out"? If so, seems to
be an issue upstream than with the switch.

Regards
